How PSG Solved The Puzzle (Reupload) | Tactical Analaysis

But what Arsenal did extremely well was ensuring that the one pivot in the 3 1 6 was always deeper than Arsenal's front 2 and that pivot was mostly Vitinha. Because if Vitinha was able to get on the ball behind the front 2, the potential for a midfield overload was becoming a real possibility. But by forcing Vitinha to drop in and make the first line of defense impenetrable, they saved off the initial threat. They made initial control inside their defensive shape impossible. Each pass inside their defensive block would be force backwards. They wanted to force PSG out wide. In PSG's right half space, they had slightly more success but the deep blcok meant that they often ran into traffic and were either forced into speculative shots from range or in swinging crosses How Luis Enrique used his midfield was completly different in the second half as they shifted from having these default positions that made theorical progression easier but meant that there was no close proximity to now having 2 or all 3 midfielders beginning to play wide on the same side. And this would naturally drag Arsenal across often to their left and crucially where in the first half, whenever Saka was drawn high up, it was Mosquera pushing up from deep to cover. Arteta now had Rice shift across to maintain defensive solidity higher up. But it also meant that Trossard often found himself having to tuck in. This naturallly meant that PSG switches were now mmore effective particularly when the half space man was able to tie up the fullback, allowing the winger to have a running start at the fullback. Alternatively, Neves and Ruiz took up these split deeper, wider positions, not only making switches for attacking direction easier but also it forced the wingers to confront the midfielder whenever they got onto the ball, opening up space higher up.
And ultimatly, when PSG equalized on penalty, we saw Arsenal come out of their defensive shell a bit and look to press a bit more. But immediatly, they looked much more vulnerable. As if the pivots didn't back up in the first phase, PSG were essentially able to stroll into the final third. On the rare occasions they were in possession, PSG were much more aggressive in the press, often with Doué or Dembélé from out to in with Hakimi aggressively backing up as they switched to a back 3. Trossard tended to drift infield with Kai Havertz looking to drop deeper at times and it could leave gaps in the defensive areas as Pacho tended to be man oriented on Kai Havertz and Marquinhos on Trossard.
