Kate, Locke and Sayid are joined by Rousseau in their mission. Eventually they discover the " Others " real home, a serie of barracks resembling quaint 1950s style houses. Expecting to find Jack as a hostage, Kate is shocked to see that Jack has fully ingratiated himself with the enemy. Kate believes that Jack has been brainwashed, but he reveals his deal to leave the island with Juliet. Unfortunatly for them, Locke has other plans. Believing it was destiny for them all to remain on the island, Locke blows up the submarine. He is then captured by Ben and the " Other " named Richard Alpert. Juliet determines that Sun conceived the baby on the island but warns her that this means certain death. Despite this new, Sun is ecstatic to learn that this means Jin is her baby's father. Meanwhile, Locks returns from his time with the " Others " to speak with Sawyer. He leads Sawyer to the " Black Rock " where the " Others " have brought Locke's villainous father Anthony Cooper to the island. Sawyer learns that Anthony Cooper is also the original Sawyer that conned his mother, leading to his parent's death. And so, Sawyer kills Cooper after Cooper tears apart a letter that young James Ford wrote to him as a child. Then Locke parts ways with hSawyer once again. Ben, who hasn't been able to communicate with Jacob for a very long time, becomes jealous that Locke seemingly has been deemed more special. And so Ben shoots Locke and leaves him for dead. It's then revealed that Ben first came to the island as a child in the 1970s when his father took a job working for the Dharma initiative, who wanted to study the island and its mysterious properties. The young Ben grew to resent Dharma and became an ally of the island's native group of Hostiles led by an unaging Richard Alpert. And so Ben helped the hostiles to murder all of the Dharma members, including his own father, using a deadly poison gas, to fully take over the island.
Meanwhile, Desmond discovers a women in the woods named Naomi who parachuted onto the island. In the season finale, the group formulate a plan to fight off the " Others " and escape the island on Penny's freighter. To fight the " Others ", Sayid, Jin and Bernard stay near the beach in order to set off the dynamite to kill the unsuspecting " Others " attackers. However, Jin misses his shoot and they get outnumber by the other attackers. But Sawyer, Juliet and a van driving Hurley arrive to save their friends and kill the attackers. Meanwhile, Jack and Rousseau lead the rest of the survivors including Naomi on a journey to a Dharma station to send a message to the freighter. But first, Desmond and Charlie would need to travel to a Dharma station of their own, named " the Looking Glass " which the " Others " used to block all the transmissions to and from the island. " The Looking Glass " is located underwater and Desmond warns Charlie that he had a vision that Charlie successfully reaches the station to unblock transmissions but dies in the process. Knowing this mission would lead to a certain death, Charlie remains resolved to see it through as it would mean Claire and Aaron would be rescued.
Charlie and Desmond both make the long swim to the underwater station where Charlie successfully turns off the jammer. He is then contacted by Penny who is completly unaware of the freighter. Before Charlie has a chance to react, a villainous " Other " named Mikhail arrives, not dead yet and blowing himself up and causing the station to flood with water. Charlie locks himself in the communication's room to contain the flooding but begins to drown. As Desmond tries to save his friend, Charlie uses his dying moments to warn Desmond that Naomi lied and that the freighter is " not Penny's boat ". With the jammer turned off, Jack prepares to radio Naomi's boat. Ben arrives to warn him that Naomi is a liar but Jack refuses to believe him. Just as Naomi makes contact with her boat, Locke arrives and murders her by throwing a knife at her, agreeing with Ben that contact with the freighter would be disastrous for them. Despite this, Jack makes contact with the freighter who agrees to send help to the island. Throughout the series, flashbacks have revealed backstories of the various survivors before the crash landing on the island. But the season 3 finale offers a twist on the format, where what at first seemed to be a flashback actually revealed to be a flashforward. Jack is a depressed, drug addicted and alcoholic doctor who regrets leaving the island. In the final moments of season 3, an emotional Jack meets with Kate and tells her that they have to go back.

They also free Alex's boyfriend, Karl who Ben has imprisoned and attempted to brainwsh in an attempt to save any chance that he impregnates Alex which would jeopardize her life. When Kate and Sawyer return to their beach home and reunite with the other survivors, the group stages a rescue mission for Jack unaware of the deal he already made with Ben to leave the island. Ben is happy that Locke blew up the submarine and informs him that his connection to ths island makes him etremely important. So Locke joins the " Others" who all leave their barrack homes, abandonning Jack, Kate, Sayid and Juliet. THe 4 then head back to the survivors' beach camp where despite Jack's good word, everyone remains very suspicious of Juliet. Hurley found some old beer and an odl Dharma van that he fixed up with Charlie, Sawyer and Jin. And fellow plane crash survivors Nikki and Paulo are revealed to have previously conned a wealthy exclusive out of diamonds worth millions of dollars. Fighting over the diamonds, the duo accidentally poisoned each other with spider venom that causes complete paralysis. When the other survivors found the bodies of Nikki and Paulo, they assumed they were dead and thus buried them alive alongside the diamonds.
Despite the survivors's lack of trust in Juliet, Sun bonds with the doctor; Juliet takes the pregnant Sun to a hidden Dharma station to run tests on her unborn child. But leaves Sawyer with the warning that Juliet was working as a spy for Ben and that the " Others " would be raiding the survivors' beach in 3 days. When Sawyer reveals this new to the camp, Jack explains that he has been working with Juliet to get information out of Ben. Meanwhile, Locke is taken by Ben to meet the mysterious leader of the " Others ", Jacob. Locke is unable to see Jacob but he can hear him.
Naomi explained that she was part of a team hired by Penny to find and rescue Desmond and that a freighter ship 80 miles of the shore could rescue them all. Naomi is also surprise to find the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 as she explains that the plane's wreckage and the bodies of all its passengers were discovered in the ocean off the coast of Bali.

WALT : La THÉORIE qui EXPLIQUE TOUT ? (LOST)
7. Dans l'épisode " the life and death of Jeremy Bentham " Matthew suit Locke partout. 10.

7. Dans l'épisode " the life and death of Jeremy Bentham " Matthew suit Locke partout. 10.

The Truth About LOST - Part 1 of 2
Season 1 was essentially a testing ground for what Lost could be. No idea was on the table but everything was on the line. In the summer of 2003, ABC executive Lloyd Braun pitched the idea of what he described as cast away the series inspired by the movie starring Tom Hanks. Based on Braun's ideas, writer Jeffrey Leber was hired to craft a story for a realistic portrayal of life on a deserted island. His pitch was indebted to " Lord of the flies " and to a lesser extent the reality TV show " Survivor ". Braun later brought successfull TV showrunner JJ Abrams abroad to rewrite the idea and create a new pilot script. Abrams wanted to make this more of a genre show and enlisted the talents of Damon Lindelof to help him craft a series Bible. Now a series Bible is essentially a large pitch document that explains the ethos of what the TV show is going to be including characters profile and episode ideas. They are designed to secure a green for development. So this document gave certain assurances over how far the series could go in term of mysteries and reveals.
Every seemingly fantastical mystery required a grounded explanation. But a series Bible is not created as a mission statement to the fan because it's not intended for public consumption. However this document was leaked online some years later which compounded an already ongoing problem. The conflation between assurances that the creators made to the network with what the creators promised to deliver us. In the series Bible, episode suggestions were included to fit the paradigm of the pitch including ideas that were not explored. These suggestions married up to guarantees of crafting story lines grounded in survivor relationships and survival themes.
Some of these included thesurvivors spending an entire episode trying to combat sunburn or food poisoning.
With more elaborate plot lines that included the survivals holding an actual island election to decide who their leader would be. An episode that would see the implementation of a sort of kangaroo court in which luck would be the equivalent of
Then the writer's room came with a better idea
There was an intent about this serie having self contained episodes and n ot rely upon a serialized mythology.
This is the most infamous part of this document mainly beacuse we know now that it was a bait and switch. Lindelof explained to slash films that they had ulterior motives from the start. They were not going for genre and do what Alias has done. Beforeanyone knew, they were casting a project without a finished script. The entire plot was put together in 12 weeks including writing, casting and productions with Abrams directing. By the time the show had been ordered to series by ABC Braun had left ABC and Abrams had been lured away to make the new mission impossible movie with Tom Cruise, leaving Lindelof with the keys to the kingdom. He found himself struggling with the demands of the show.

LOST EXPLAINED PART 14 - THE DHARMA INITIATIVE
They maintained a large presence in the island in the 1970s. right through the 1980s. The initiative's purpose was of scientific discovery. It's suggested that the mission was to change to change the Valenzetti equation which was a sequence predicting the end of humanity. But from the show it's clear that their goals were more varied and complex than just this. Dharma was a mix of doctors, scientists, teachers, security forces, workmen and families that formed something akin to a hippie commune. Each department had its own hierarchy and specific function. Departments included meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism and the utopian social project which were the aimof seeking peace and prosperity for the whole world. Dharma was most likely established at the late 1960s at the height of the counter culture moment and cold war, a time when everyone feared nuclear annihilation. Horace Goodspeed was the man in charge on the island, the leader of the utopian social project in which establishing and managing a colony of families and creating a harmonious commune was the primary objective. If they could create a peaceful utopia on the island, perhaps they could replicate the formula elsewhere in the world. But Dharma weren't alone on the island as Richard's group aka the Others aka the hostiles had been occupying this island for a very long time. The others objected to Dharma's plundering of the land in the name of science while Dharma objected to the native sense of proprietary ownership over this unclaimed territory. To Dharma the properties of the island should benefit all of mankind. It's implied that Dharma looked at the Others as a backwards cult some imaginary island deity.
To the Others, Dharma can have certain sectors of the island to inhabit as long as they don't cross the line into the hostile sacred places such as the temple nor they should interfere with the electromagnetic hotspots and rivers that connect to the hostile sacred spring waters. But Dharma had plans to take over the temple and b uild a new station there or at least investigate further possibly to extract samples from the spring waters for experimental purposes. Dharma's intention to do this is clearly evidenced on Ben's map. The word temple had been scrawled on the paper above a Dharma logo. This plan might have been the final straw that triggered the purge. Around the brokering of the truce, Dharma erects a giant sonar fence around their residential barracks, mresumably to secure their location from both the others and encounters with the smoke monster of which there must have been fatalities over the years. One of the houses in the barracks is constructed adjacent to an old ruin from the egyptian period most likely to further study its origin and purpose. Dharma didn't seem aware of these tunnels beneath them constructed during the same egyptian period. But Dharma began to extend its reach beyond the compound fence. They build research stations for various purposes. The stations are : the hydra, a zoological research station located several miles off the coast on a smaller island. It includes an underwater aquarium section presumably where the shark from season 2 episode "Adrift " was branded. Plus a number of animal cages above the ground where several polar bears were kept. The polar bears were being trained in how to retrieve fish biscuits through a complicated reward system. Maybe this was related to their potential use down in the frozen donkey wheel chamber. Hydra also hid a special room on site used to interrogate hostiles then wipe the short term memories using mk ultra style brainwashing techniques and drugs.
It's possible that characters like Danielle Russo oreven Claire Littletown were taken to this place althoguht it seems more possible that Claire's amnesia in season 1 was due to the drugs Ethan had been lacing her drinking water with. Then there was the tempest, a station designed to study deadly gases and other chemicals, possibly to see how the island might affect controlled chemical reactions. The station could produce store and distribute toxic gas and it's this gas that was used against Dharma in the purge. We can assume the Others took control of the facility with help from inside man Ben and opened the gas lines into the barracks The arrow station was empty by the time we see it in season 2. According to Pierre Chang's introduction, ( the recording of which is interrupted in season's 5 opening scene ), the arrows's primary purpose was the development of defensive strategies against the hostiles. By the time the tail section survivors find it, it has been cleared out. Maybe it was home to weapons and intelligence on the locations of the hostiles. One of the remaining box contained a glass' eye, probably Mikhail's one which proof that he was telling the truth when he told that he was initially recruited by Dharma. Be was brought to the island to be part of the security force waging war against the natives only to switch sides several years into his term. The flame was a communication station, perhaps an upgraded version of the old radio tower which was one of Dharma's first structures on the island. The flame was an essential hub for surveillance intelligence gathering and task dispensing across the island. It was initially run by Stuart Radzinski, a paranoid b utdriven science officer than later occupied by Mikhail. The staff was a medical station which functionned an emergency medical facility for initiative personnel that were injured outside the barracks and couldn't reach the other side of the island. Thisb ecame a key outpost to the Others.
They would use the staff as a primary operating room for expectant mothers in their quest to solve the pregnancy crisis. The looking glass was established as an underwater station used as a beacon to help guiding submarines and vessels approaching the island. It was needed because only a specific corridor through the electromagnetic bulbe around the island could be used in order to reach its shore safely. Ben later used the station to jam transmissions off of the island in 2004. The power cable found on the beach by Sayid was allegedly the power cable to the looking glass. People asked why the losties didn't cut that wire. Firstly the cable would have been designed to whistand blunt force, wear and tear. Secondly, the looking glass had a back up generator just like other stations. Cutting the wire would guarantee nothing. The orchid station is a greenhouse on the surface msot likely designed to fool the hostiles into thinking that it was an innocuous facility interested in botanical research only. The greenhouse disguised an undergroud station beneath. This laboratory was built adjacent to a pocket of electromagnetic energy. The aim was to study this exotic matter and experiment in manipulating time. Accessing and studying the light beneath the island was Dharma's primary objective. Dharma was aware of the donkey wheel chamber as seen in season 5 episode " because you left ". Chang insisted to not dig any further from this side but they had plans to someday access the wheel once their experiments in the orchid reached a plateau. We can deduce this with polar bears being trained in how to operate complex mechanisms and systems. It also tracks that the bears would be able to withstand the freezing cold temperatures of the wheel chamber too.
First test in preparation for doing this came when Pierre Chang's team placed a bear inside the exotic mata chamber. It's why we see a polar b ear squeleton in the Tunisian desert in 2004. It's found by former Dharma child Charlotte Lewis who had been seeking out her birthplace. Part of a tapestry of time threaded by the source with help from Jacob across decades, even centuries. The swan : it's the Dharma station we are the most familiar with. Originally intended as a laboratory where scientists could work to understandthe unique electromagnetic fluctuations beneath that sector. However, Stuart Radzinsky's drilling unleashed the energy causing the incident that almost destroyed the world. Thanks to Jack and Juliet carrying out Faraday's plans, the hydrogen bomb jughead was detonated causing an implosion that temporarily plugged the the leak. Long enough for the area to be filled with concrete and the swan hatch to be built. But the energy kept building up b eneath the site which is what prompted the need to discharge the build up every 108 minutes. The swan site went from being a research station to being something more akin to an electromagnetic reactor. Everytime the energy builds, it is channel through something installed behind that concrete wall, something that is able to discharge the build up at the push of a button. The lost video game via domus shows what could have been on the other side of the concrete. This section of the swan was indicated on the blast door map but not seen in the show itself. Therefore it's not entirely canon.

LOST Explained - The Theory of Everything: Part One (The Light, The Island & The Protector)
Jacob's mother tells her 2 boys that the electromagnetic light at the heart of the island is the source of life, death and rebirth. And that part of this light exist within every human being in the world. In other words this light is the elemental force responsible for existence as we know it. This is where all life and time flows out from the source is the eternal battery powering our existence and it powers the sentinience of human being. Now an ancient like mystic mother might call this light inside people a soul like a physicist like Daniel Faraday might call this light consciousness. Soul and consciousness in Lost are one and the same thing. The light is our memories, emotions, collective experience. We came from the source we we return to it in death.
The flash sideways in season 6 is the visual representation of this process. It's a subjective dream state where characters can slowly let go of their mortality before rejioning with their souls accompanied by their soulmates who bonded with them in life time has no meaning in this construct of consciousness which makes sense because it exists within the light and the light is made up of electromagnetic photons and photons don't experience time. It'swhy everyone arrives in the flash sideways at the same time even if they died at different points in their lives. Boone died in 2004, Jack in 2007, Kate many years later, presumably from old age. Yet they all wake up inside this construct at the same time. Everything that happened in their lives before this both on and off the island was real. This is also the reason why the church fills with light at the end as they prepare to move on because their collective consciousness is back to the force that gave them life to begin with. It was important to protecct the lights because if it goes out in the island then everyone's inner light goes out too. The threat isn't just existential but also literal. Eloise Hawking explains that there are pockets of electromagnetic energy all around the globe mostly beneath the ocean and they are all connected to and flow out from the light beneath the island. The island often moves between these points in space time. There are other geological areas on land that also have these pockets so if the light is endangered, plundered or extinguished at its source then the light would be affected in those pockets too, we see the beginning of this process happening when the source is essentially turned off in the series finale after Desmond Hume uncorks it. The island starts breaking up and falling apart It seems like it's beginning to sink. This would happen to all the other energy pockets around the globe.
Land masses breaking up and sinking and sea beds quaking causing untold destruction and devastation across the planet. Searchers think taht the universe started in a single point called singularity, a point of infinite density and gravity. This gravitational singularity contained all teh energy and space time of the universe, then it exploded in what science refers to as the big bang. The source is the focal point of our existence, not just the heart of the island. If the source is the origin of all consciousness and the resson for why everything is the way that it is that means it can be tied directly to the idea of the singularity and the b ig bang to the original of the universe and space time himself. The source wasn't just forged inthe fitre creation, the source is the fire of creation itself. It's perhaps within the inner core of our planet where the source thrives. This light operates within a fourht dimensional space, a space we refer to as time itself. The electromagnetic energy is what made the formation of all life possible. by bringing fourth dimensional consciousness into this three dimensional space. You could look at itlike the beating heart of a living orgnism. or even like the power center inside a machine. The writers origianlly planned for the light of source to be located in the heart of a volcano which was alluded in season 3 spisode : " the man b ehind the curtain ". Afterbeing constricted by the studio's budget limitations however they changed the location to a cave. The source has connective tentacles of energy spreading out beneath the planet's crust like veins. The source of electromagnetism pockets were buried at various depths beneath the surface by either Earth or water. Water might be the crucialelement keeping the light cool We know the source can overheatand unleash large bursts of radiation.
This energy can also burn itself out perhaps because the light is buried beneath Earth and water, it prevents our world from returning to that unhabitable volcanic magma planet that it started out as. One of these spots is based on Tunisia, a place that Charles Widmore referred to as the exit to John Locke. Another location is in the Australian outback beneth Isaac of Villuru's in which he harnesses the energy in order to heal the sick. Another confirmed location is beneath the lamppost station in Los Angeles. There are surely other hot spots that we haven't seen. A possible location could also be in Antarctica where we see Penelope's people monitoring for electromagnetic anomalies in the polls. Presumably the showrunners based the idea of these geological hot spot on the pseudo scientific idea of a vile vortex. These vortices are supposed to be anomalic regions distributed across the Earth where disproportionately many strange phenomena occur such as disappearances and miscellaneous types of paranormal activities. Some even claim that the Bermuda triangle is one of these alledged areas. It's these hot spots that offer up a variety of possible teleportation points for the island to move to. The source is connected directly to these places in Subterranean way and this energy resides so deep inthe Earth that we could not realistically reach it from digging up the ground. This energy can be properly accessed where it's the most concentrated : the island. Some fans have been saying that Jacob and the island were the same thing. However for all his powers, Jacob is still a man while the source is its own master because the island has a life and a will of its own. The source of light beneath the island's land mass which Jacob's mother called the heart of the island. It's the guiding force and prime power behind every single event in the show.
The island acts as a cork holding the limitless energy in place. If the island is destroyed, the energy would destabilize and be destroyed. And this would lead to a tear in the very fabric of existence as we know it beacuse the source has carefully weaved a tapestry of time together that represents our entire existence. This tapestry has many threads that cross over and intertwine with one another due to the time travel paradox. If it ceases to exist at any point of the timeline, whether the ancient past, 1977, 2007 or somewhere in the far flung future, then all time and life would cease to be. The source must self sustain to ensure that the world continues to turn. When Jack speaks to Christian in the final flash sideways, Christian says that there is no now here. That's because within the light, time does not exist which mean if the light is indeed sentient and self aware then it already knows how all the time plays out which means everything that happens has already happened and its own will is already weaved into the tapestry of events itself just like the choice of all of our characters. So it does what it must to perpetuate the cycle of life which includes risking its own existence in order to ensure its own existence. The only time we are mentioned about the island holding back evil from the woirld is when Jacob explains things to Richard Alpert in 1867. Jacob explainsthe essential dilemma of the island to Richard. He dresses it up with religious pagentry and simplifies it to be understandable to a man who thinks he is literally in hell right now. Jacob only tells people what they need to know, when they need to know it. Jacob is still subservient to the island and defers to its will. Man inblack aka the smoke monster is powered by the source. He is forever tethered to its energy as we see in the end. The only way he can escape to this electromagnetic prison is to kill the protectors and turn off the power.
When the cork is removed, the water drains out and the source starts to overheat and turn into a raging volcanic fire or in other words the light is essentially turning into hell fire. This fire would follow the passenges and tendril of light pockets around the world transforming the Earth back into the volcanic planet that it started as billions of years ago. Richard was convinced by the man in black that he was in hell and that Jacob was the devil and some of these ideas never really left Richard's mind. Even 140 years later, some part of Richard still believe that he is trapped in hell and being punished by God in some way. That's because Richard is a man of faith. So Jacob explains the situation in a way that a man of faith like Richard might comprehend. However Jacob's mother never mentionned darkness or evil. She only talks about the light, the energy that gives us all life. If there was evil down that cave in any form whatsoever, don't you think she would have mentioned. It seems like an important detail to skip over. Once the cork was removed, the light band tail and the volcanic fire began to burn. This switched off the light but also switched off the darkness. It transformed the man in black back into a mortal form. It didn't unleash smoke monster energy on the world.Nothing implies darkness was spreading or the evil had been uncorked. That's because it was a metaphor, not literal. The scens script description for the end of the serie is fascinating to read in the context of what are are discussing. It describes what happens when the light goes out.
When Jack returns to the cave to reinstall the cork later on, they describe it this way :
While the smoke monster is representative of negative memories and emotions, becoming an embodiement of the past, that doesn't mean that's allitis. When Desmond removes the cork, we don't see more darkness escaping or more smoke monster energy rising and spreading. We simply see the volcanic fire of creation beginning to burn. We saw that light in the serie has other properties like making Richard stopping aging, healing properties. It's mastery over the laws of time and space. We always want more time, more power, more life. This is why many people try to get the light over the centuries. Because its power when harnessed can make gods of men. You can heal ilness and ailments by being in close proximity to the light. This is demonstrated with Locke's legs and Rose's cancer but also with Fadaray's fractured mind ravaged by radiation from his experiments. Light infused water can also reverse potential fatal injuries to a prior state in time before you had those injuries. It regenerates damaged tissues and cells. Undergroud chambers appear to channel the light through water streams into ancient places such as the temple and the donkey wheel chamber. River streams that flowed all over the island created a natural circulatory system. However the light does heal selectively as we learn with Ben's cancer. In Ben's case it needed the others to see that the island no longer wanted him as its leader. It was the source's way of communicating that Ben's time was indeed over and that it was now John Locke's time.
LOST Explained - The Theory of Everything: Part Three (The Rules, The Others & The Candidates)
There is an interpretation that Eko's last scene as a child walking away with Yemi is our first glimpse of the flash sideways. Jacob tried to proovehis brother wrong about humanity. he wants to build a society on the island that will live harmoniously together and help him to protect the light. He want his brother to see how important the island is in their existence and in the existence of all things. If the worst of us can be redeemed, then anyone could be redeemed. Winning this game isn't about personnel victory for Jacob but about securing a future for humanity. However whatever goodthat was once in the man in black, it was taken away and returned to the source. All left of him was darkness. e couldn't abide by Jacob's faith. He thoguht that if he could subvert or corrupt the societies that Jacob tried to build, he could make his brother lose that faith and break his spirit. If Jacob had no faith or followers, the man in b lack might be able to escape this prison. For centuries the 2 brothers played out their game. A protector of the island doesn't have absolute power. Jacob himself had limits. He cannot resurrect the deads because the light inside that person returned to the source. Only the island itself could choose who comes back and it has to be for a reason. Jacob can just harness some of the power at the heart of the island and manipulate the light within a person if they are still living. Both brothers couldn't kill each other because both were candidates for the role of protector. They couldn't be killed until their purpose had been served. A candidate cannot die without the island's permission. Michael Dawson tries to kill himself several times but fail in season 4 episode " Meet Kevin Johnson ". Being a candidate isn't just about being in contention for the role of island guardian. It's also about serving a purpose in the grand tapestry of time.
So how could Jacob kill his brother at least physically? It changed when he took up the role and her mother was killed. A protector means new rules Protectorscan inherit and pass on certain tenets of guardianship, but it remains their choice which rules they continue. When someonenew takes over, old rules seem to fade unless reinforced by the successor. That's why when Jack takes over, Richard starts aging again and the cave in the bamboo forest can now be found. In Jacob killed the man in black let'ss say in year 1 055, the world would end because the man in b lack is the reason why Ben pushes the donkey wheel in the future which instigates the time loop. If the man in black could have kill Jacob in 1 867 via proxy, then the world would have ended too because Jacob needs to touch and draw the candidates to the island so they can follow their predestined paths, path including saving the island from destruction. Both men are trapped within a bootstrap paradox that spans centuries, that takes nearly 2 millennia to be fulfilled. Maybe Jacob didn't even need to reinforce his mother's rule because it was the island's rule and will. The reason why Jacob outlived him after season 5 finale is because no one had filled his vacant position. Most of Jacob's rules at the end of the season 6 resolve around preventing the man inblack from harming him or his chosen people and from leaving the island.

LOST SAISON 6 : Une Catastrophe ?

LOST Explained - The Theory of Everything: Part Three (The Rules, The Others & The Candidates)
12 MINUTES
When Jacob demonstrates an awareness of this time loop, he is aware of its existence by the time we meet him in season 5 finale. After he is stabbed, he is referring to the candidates returning to the present day from the past. It's as if he could feel their final time jump coming. His awareness of time travel shenanigans is further evidence when he later tells Hurley the temple Jin's encounter with the french team took place seemingly without Jacob physically present to witness. So Jacob has been aware of the time loop and time travelers for some time at least as late as 1988 but possibly even earlier. He didn't seem cognizant of the time travel back when he met Richard Alpert in 1867. We don't get sense that he knows about the bootstrap paradox. Maybe a key event during the timeline activated this knowledge. For example the arrival of Locke at the others camp in 1954. Richard Alpert almost certainly would have told Jacob about this convincing meeting from a man claiming to be coming from the future. Then the permanent appearance of the time travelers in 1974 would have gotten Jacob's full attention. The people on this Dharma thing weren't selected. Then surely the incident in 1977 would have cracked open the whole time loop equation for Jacob. Many Jacob's specifical rules are tied to the outcomes of this time loop as are the majority of decisions he makes in the latter half of the 20th century. The source was moving our characters through time. Because Jacob is connected to this power, he begins to help weave these threads towards the future so his version of the rules are rooted in determinism which means all events including human agency are ultimatly determined by causes external to an individual's will. That external cause is the source. The rule that a protector creates and maintains must be based upon what the source dictates that it can or cannot control.
This is why the internal logic in the show particularly in season 5 isn't wishy washy mysticism but rather causal determinism. Writers explain how rules work in the opening scene of season 5 The rules govern the reality of the island and determine the trajectory of the characters If you still have work to do or a purpose to server in the grand scheme, the island will ensure you live long enough to complete that work. Rules are made by various communities on the island with varying degrees of enforcability over the centuries. The Others have their laws just like Dharma have their own. The truce between the 2 tribes is a perfect example of this. These laws can and are frequently broken. But the protector's rules go beyond this. They are tied to the nature of time and fate and they determine who live, who don't who can leave the island and who must stay. These rules become the foundation of the gameplay for everyone. After 2 000 years of this, the man in black had enough and decides his final solution : kill the jailer. But the only way is to cheat, and get someone else to do the one thing that he himself can never do. It's unclear when the man in black started killing undiscriminately. By the 19th century he is at the peak of his frustration. It's been demonstrated that he used people before this to help him such as the Egyptians and that there were warring ideologies on the island for possibly centuries with groups split between Jacob and the man in black. The man in black came to understand that every new arrival would mean the cycle of the game starting all over again. He also knows his previous attempts to escape failed so rather than allowing a new community to form, he tries to corrupt or coerce them into doing his bidding. He just starts punishing and executing new island arrivals on the site simply to get back at his brother.
However the arrival of the Black Rock at 1867, meant a turning point in the game because the man in black formulated a new plan. Richard Alpert was a perfect stooge for brothers. He was a devil fearing man of faith with a tragic past that was ripe for manipulation. He sees the darkest part of Richard's soul and his pain over loosing Isabella. A man who's deeply held religious beliefsmake him amenable for coercion and that makes Richard the perfect anti candidate. The man in black uses Isabella's image to play into Richard's inner fear of hell, the devil and eternal damnation. He leaves Richard for a long tim to absorb this narrative to become desperate and on the edge of insanity. Then he appears as friendly stranger reinforcing the lie that they are in hell but he offers Richard the hope that the devil can be beaten and that both Richard's and Isabella's souls can be freed. Richard carries out the task and fails perhaps because his heart isn't really in it. His inner light is still intact. Richard's presence and actions changed the trajectory of everything. Abaterno is a cornerstone episode in the mythology. It's when Jacob realizes something, several realities that he had not yet come to terms with. First is that the man in black is serious about trying to kill him. There is no ambiguity. His soul cannot be saved. Second reality is that one day the man in black will succeed and Jacob recognizes this might be the beginning of the end. Third realization is that Jacob needs to start looking for replacements. Up to this point he was probably not searching. He had only be drawing people to the island for the purpose of the game. A key floor in Jacob's philosophy is that he didn't want to interfere in the matter of the island's colonies. He didn't want to tell people what to do or how to live. He needed them to work that out for themselves. He tells Richard as such in abaterno. Richard says this would only leave them with the man in black's influence.
Jacob saw this happening to the Egyptians, his adopted culture, and the cycle would never end until he or his brother were dead. So Richard becomes the middle man, the advisor , the link between Jacob and the island's civilization that they would build together. Soon after the events of abaterno. Jacob goes into hiding so that the man in black cannot find him.He takes refuge inside the statue and begins weaving his tapestry both literally and metaphorically. The man in black only knew the statue was a spot where Jacob liked to spend his time in. But the man in black didn't know there was a secret chamber inside the statue itself. Like the cave of light, Jacob can controls who finds him. Anyone can find the full toed statue but only those Jacob has allowed can come inside. He let both Ben and fake Locke inside in 2007 because he plays into the endgame which he knows he may have to die in order to move the chain of events forward. After the attempt on his life in 1867, Jacob stopped making his presence findable to his brother, essentially disappearing meaning the man in black cannot keep sending people to kill him. This is why the man in black needs to formulate a longer more involved plan. Firstly to gain access to Jacob's whereabouts, secondly to find a truly motivated Jacob's killer. Jacob would start giving written instructions or lists to Richard when needed but his philosophy remained the same : let the people make their own choices and let the island guiding them into their destiny. The next batch of people coming in the island after this appear to be hand picked exclusively. They are people the man in black would struggle to coerce. Once the candidates are created and start arriving, the man in black can't physically kill them so if he comes across people who aren't protected by Jacob's touch on the island, he either kills them or assesses if they could be useful to them in some way, such as we see with Mr. Eko.
Surely there were many people among the Others that were candidates. We see familiairs names on the lighthouse with 360 candidates over 140 years. Some could have been Others, other from Dharma and so on. In the 20th century the game gets more complicated for everyone with the search for candidates and the birth of the Others. The Others are called this way because of Danielle Rousseau. Actual members of Others questionate this terminology and phrasing. In reality the Others are really Richard Alpert's group. Many of whom chosen by Jacob who uses his proxy to recruit them. As Richard takes the role of advisor, Jacob hides and begins weaving a threat towards the future. Richard's group mission is to help Jacob protecting the island from both internal and external enemies. They create rules for this group to adhere. Over years, Richard's groups received instructions from Jacob. It's about tasks or people needing to be recruited. Others follow rituals and rules that they don't always fully understand. Remember the book of laws that Richard includes in this test to the young John Locke. That book is the foundation of the Others society. Their code of conduct if not their Bible sort of. The Others are not allowed to kill one another which is way Ben blames Charles Widmore for Alex's death. That's why Ben said that he changed the rules. That being said, one season earlier, he ordered Mickail to execute Bonnie and Greta down in the Looking Glass Station. Point is that when you kill one of your own you have to face consequences. Stranger in a stranger land explores this notion when Juliet kills is punished for killing Danny Pickett who was one of their own. She is put on trial and an execution is an option on the table if she is found guilty on the crime. Further rules appear to include not leaving the island withotu permission or unless absolutly essential. Another rule is no unauthorized contact with the outside world to protect the location of the island.

Every recruit must demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice something, mostly from their past. This is why Ben and Locke are respectedly expected to make a show of committment through blood sacrifice. Because they were on the island not because of choices but circumstances. The Others required them to make a different kind of sacrifice. Ben demonstrated his committment by killing his abusive father. Locke was expected to do the same thing with his father. We see that Locke is able to cheat this rule with a little help from Richard. We see rules from what is required to be another such as learning Jacob's original language : latin. It's useful to maintain a secret coded language and helps with internal group communications particularly under duress or capture. By now Latin was a long dead language and it helps keeping Jacob's heritage alive. A controversial rule is the willingness to self sacrifice. The island needs you so committed to its cause that you would e willing to give your life for it and this need could arise for a number of reasons. For example if another is under threat or captured by perceived enemies of the island or even to protect the temple and sacred places from being discovered. This rule seems to lend itself to the idea of being willing to kill for the island as well. It's hard to know if it's an actual rule from the book of laws or something the Others sstarted to adopt themselves after prior experiences. After all, these people are zealots and like them are willing to kill and die for their beliefs. Every Other eventually experiences miracle themselves, the island's ability to heal being one of the biggest. They know this place is special, making them more motivated to protect it. However the Others have more humanistic and compassionate rules too. Anyone deemed good or worthy of their island's paradise. This includes all babies and childrens coming into the island through the machinations of fate.

Quel était le plan de Charles Widmore ? - FAQ sur Lost
Widmore was brought to the island in the 1940s or 1950s presumably by Richard Alpert. He becomes a devout of the island. He is willing to maim and kill for the island. In 1954 he meets John Locke claiming to be from the future and the leader of the Others. Charles Widmore builds relationships with fellow others including Eloise Hawking. Later she becomes leader of the Others and wages a cold war against Dharmathroughout the 1970s. By 1977, Eloise has fallen pregnant by Charles. Aroud the same time, a young Dharma defector named Benjamin Linus pops up on Richard's radar after he is healed in the sacred temple. But only Jacob's people can do this. By bypassing Charles and Eloise, it makes Ben one of them without any oversight from the island leadership. Richard claims Jacob wanted it done but it's uncertain. Charles resent the fact that Richard did this. Meanwhile people appear claiming to be from the future including Jack Shepard and Daniel Faraday. She recalls speaking to the same man when she was a young women in 1954. She kills Daniel only to realize he might be her own son. This motivates her to help Hack setting off the Jughead to neutralize the electromagnetic leak caused by the accident thus preventing the hatch from needing to be built, hoping to change her fate. However this always happened and the bomb ensures that the hatch is built. As far as Richard, Charles and Eloise were concerned, the Losties were dead. Daniel Faraday's journals has research on Dharma initiative, their stations, personnel and has instruction on how to operate the pipelines at the Tempest station which Widmore later use against Dharma. The journal also contains information about Desmond Hume, including a chronicle of his meeting with Daniel at Oxford in 1996. It depicts specific details of the future life lived by Charles and Eloise's unborn son. His work as a physicist and his experiments.
As Charles and Eloise learn about how things will happen, they understand that unless the future plays out as written, then the incident will never be averted and the world will end in 1977. If not from the incident, from a catastrophic time paradox, Eloise's mission becomes about maintaining the timeline and raising Daniel to fulfill his destiny. Charles ascends to leadership of the Others. His bitterness and zealotism leads to the purge of Dharma, an island genocide. Then he becomes somewhat of a tyran to his people. He frequently leave the island to focus on making up for lost time by having another child, one that he hopes will not suffer similar fate to that of his arranged son. During these absences, Ben started to rally the Others around him. So Widmore is eventually casted out. So he blames all his grievances on Ben. He lost his partner, his son, his power and his people. But Widmore amassed a fortune and owned a business on the outside world. He could use his money for various entreprises around the globe. Just because he was excommunicated from the island doesn't mean he had his responsabilities alleviated to the island. So he controlled the flow of knowledge regarding its existence on the outside world. When he meets Desmond Hume, he sees how he factors into his life. He resents him because he knows Desmond's fate is to go to the island and push the button which means Desmond can never do anything else other than break his daughter's heart. It's also about sacrificing his family's interests to the island's interests. His working on the timeline is evidenced by him placing his right hand man Matthew Abdon on the ground to watch over John Locke, another predestinated island traveler, the one he met in 1954. Thanks to Jack and the time travelers from 1977, the crashing of Oceanic 815 is another event Widmore knows it's destined to occur which gives him time to set up the fake plane's wreckage with a full manifest of dead passengers deep in the Sundra Trench.
Fans ask why Widmore never used the Lampost station to track down the island. Him and Eloise have not been on speaking terms for a long time. They are working on their individual threads of the destiny equation. Eloise still has contact with Ben and the Others and took over the Lampost personally. He still had a role to play in the upcoming events so he spent ressources to find the island. And eventually settle an old score in the process. It's where the Kahana freighter comes into play. 3 teams on that ship. First team was reconnaissance mission led by Naomi Dorret. She had to get on the island and set up a base then open up a line of communication between the freighter and the island. Judging from her cover story she might have been tasked with finding Desmond. Due to the journal, Charles Widmore knew Desmond's importance for the timeline. Second team had Daniel Farraday, Charlotte Lewis and Miles Storm. They were recruited by Widmore, Abdan and Naomi respectively under belief that they were sent to the island for research purposes. He knew they were going to travel back in time and meet him in the 1950s and that Daniel would later appear in the 1970s then killed by Eloise. From 1977 onwards, Widmore and Eloise had been planning for this time loop.
