Why Did the Lockdown Take Place? - LOST EXPLAINED FAQ

Season 2 is foudnational season establishing key mythological building blcoks but also it features a complicated serie of events surrounding the hatch., the computer and Henry Gale's capture and subsequent escape. Some believe that the ' Others ' were in the dark about the real purpose of the swan station, mostly based on the lie Ben tells to Locke in season 2 He stayed he crawled through the events, stood at the computer, that the timer went all the way down to 0 then nothing really happened. Ben was trying to undermine Locke's faith in the island. It was a risk but Ben thought it was worth it. Ben is arrogant guy that risk other lifes to flex his hubris. Except that with Alex, he loses. The Others probably knew things about the swan station especially considering that Ben was an officiel Dharma initiative member. The energy beneath the island was understood to be great power and the Others knew all Dharma stations and their purposes. The Others had detailed knowledge about the other Dharma stations. Tom made it clear that the Others are aware of the hatch in season 2, episode ' the hunting party '. Season 3 confirms that Ben and Juliet had been monitoring livee camera feeds coming from the swan station. Ben used the pearl station to observe life in the hatch is a proof that they have been watching some events on and off at some times and frequently had a look at Desmond. IN season 5, even Juliet what was going on in the swan when she tells Miles about the fact that it's a Dharma station with Desmond who had lived down in it. It's improbable thet Ben and the others didn't know about the importance of the button especially after the accident in 1977. They know what happen if the energy becomes destabilized. And they know about the dam that Dharma built to plug a leak that Dharma had caused. But why didn't the Others take back control of the swan after the purge?

Stuart was one of the only Dharma members who didn't leave and survived. A theory said that he was spared because he was the lasst man on the island with technical understanding on how the swan station really worked from the electromagnetic fluctuations to all the computer equipments that monitored everything and from the Swan's reactor call to the failsafe system designed to destroy it. Charles Widmore, leader of the Others at the time, would allow him to live in if he kept pushing the button. Like paying an ongoing penance for creating this problem in the first place. In return he would receive supplies and a hatch partner. But after Stuart Radzinsky committed suicide, logically the Others should have fully taken control of the Swan station like with all the other stations. But as we find out with Boone and Locke in seadon 1, it was almost impossible to penetrate the station in order to get inside unless someone lets you in. It's the most secured bunker on the island. With Sstuart dead, the Others were left with the paranoid trigger happy Kelvin Inman who lacked the history of what went down in the previous years. If Ben wanted to take over the Swan by force, it could have resulted in a firefight with Kelvin. And a straight bullet could easily damage equipment or cause another incident. A brief tassel between Desmond and Jack resulted in killing the computer and if it was not for Sayid, the world might have ended over a misunderstanding. So Ben just watched over and allowed supplies to come to the island. But maybe another reason of why the Others stayed away from the swan station is because Jacob ordered them to stay away from the hatch so that destiny could play as planned. After all, the crash happened because of the hatch and Desmond.

The Others kidnapped Walt, which was implied to be on Jacob's orders as we see in the mobisode ' room 23 '. In order to learn more about Walt they needed context of his background and how he grew up. Most of survivors had extensive records and histories. But for a 10 years old boy like Walt, there was almost nothing. So they needed his father, Michael Dawson. The Others learned that sneaking on group of people could result in unecessary bloodshed so they could make Michael come to them. The communications between Michael and Walt in the hatch hardly makes sense. Walt must have somehow escaped from his cell at the hydra where he was being kept. Out of all the computers on the hydra, it happens to be the one connecting to the computer in the hatch. At the moment when Michael just happens to be lurking around in the swan computer. Not only that but Walt escapes his cell once again and gain access to the hydra computer again to give his dad precise instructions on where to go and how to get there. Then Michael running into the ' Others ' following the same instructions. It's possible that the message was sent by Mickail. These stations share an intranet between them and can be used for communications. The flame is literallly the communication station. The Others wanted to learn more about Walt but they had to get Michael away from the beach to do that. Ben was also studying Jack's file and watching him in the hatch and seeing with who the doctor is emotionally attached too, eventually learning that using Kate could control Jack and using Sawyer could control Kate. Once Ben was ready for the surgery, Michael would be used to lure Jack. In the Pearl station, Ben confirms to Juliet that this was the original plan. But the Others couldn't predict that their leader Ben would be captured by Danielle Rousseau then locked up in the hatch armory. They couldn't storm the hatch by force. So they used Michael.

Ironically they had the opportunity to catch all the 3 in season 2 ' the hunting party '. At this point Ben si still observing and learning about Jack trying to ascertain the best way to manipulate him into performing the surgery but it isn't until the very moment when it becomes clear what Jack truly cares about. He gives away all the guns to save Kate and walks away. Meanwhile, Kate's emotionnal connection with Sawyer was already demonstrated in the hatch. Another reason why they didn't capture them already was because with John Locke with them, Ben doesn't want the fabled John Locke anywhere near his people. The lockdown in season 2 has the station going on some kind of automated security procedure seeing the blast doors closing and seemingly lock in the current occupants of the hatch. This procedure was implemented by Stuart. Emergency system if the swan was under threat? It seems designed to lock in intruders. After the accident of 1977, the Dharma believed that not only had a hostile shot one of their own kids but other hostiles had infiltrated the barracks and started a gun fight before invading the swan site and killing even more Dharma workers. Meanwhile the Other learnt that Dharma broke the truce by digging in off limits sectors of the island. So the life in 1980s would have become even more intense with diplomatic relations at breaking point. Especially afteer Eloise leaves the island to give birth to Daniel Faraday leaving Charles Widmore in charge and we know his solution about the Dharma problem. During this time, construction of the swan was finished. James Lafleur and his recruits were embedded within Dharma for 3 years and might have worked with the hostiles Stuart believes that the hostiles already tried to once invade the swan so Stuart would have wanted to protect the station at all costs. Baked into their construction, all Dharma stations had their security measures.

The Hydra was isolated from the mainland on a separate island that Dharma controlled. The Staff was hidden in the jungle under camouflage sheeting. The Orchid was also hidden, its upper level disguised as a botanical research garden in order to hdie the real stations's purpose underneath. The tempest was no doubt guarded by armed personnel. The Flame was rigged with explosives in case the station was taken over by hostiles. The Glass station was offshore and underwater and considered inaccessible without the right equipment unless you are a good swimmer willing to take the plunge. In the Swan there was an emergency escape hatch included so the station could be evacuated. When Ethan takes Claire for a walk in the Staff station, you can see a panel on the wall of the corridor marked as escape hatch. Blstools were here to protect the computer from emergencies. Asumption is that the lockdown is related to the supply drop outside because of the timing. The panel of food looked intended for personnel in the hatch and explains how they kept their shelves well stocked up by the times the Losties arrived. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse confirm this in a special feature of season 3 dvd show. Why would the hatch men need to be sealed in for this supply drop to take place. A speculation within the show posits a potential theory. But why the hatch men would be at risk of seeing the pallet dropped when they are stucked below the ground? And why hiding it from them? In the epilogue ' the new man in charge ', we see that drops are sent by drones on an automated flight plan from a warehouse facility in Guam. The lockdown comes included with a 20 minutese warning. The reason why Locke doesn't hear it properly is because the speaker system is old and run down, barely audible. But the warning was here so a man would position himself near the computer for the time of the lockdown. The blaasters could ensure that on one access to the Swan during the supply process.

There is also the possibility that the lockdown was triggered by another station. The Others could have tried to use this even as a distraction to take Ben back from the Swan. Locke's plan was to go beneath the blasters and leave Ben alone which would have been enough time for Ben to wriggle through the vents and to a possible exit. Locke ends up trapped beneath the blast door leaves the computer unattended and Ben for all of his deceptions still knows that the button must be pushed. In the process he is also learning more about John and Jack plus the other survivors. He might also think that he could confirm the Henry Gale story even more. But of course this story ends up being exposed by Sayid. Only 2 days later, Michael returns to the camp with order to break out Ben.

What Happened to Desmond's Flashes of the Future? - LOST EXPLAINED FAQ

Both Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking knew it was important for Desmond to go to the island because of Daniel Faraday's journal entry. But the island has been guiding Desmond throughout his entire life. His experience in monastery and army were both to prepare him for the islandMonastery taught him how to handle solitude and silence. The army tuaght him discipline and how to follow orders. But the biggest influence from the island comes after he turns the key at the end of season 2. His intense electromagnetic exposure to the source's dislouges his consciousness from the flowof linear time. From his exposure he begins to see visions from the island, specific visions about specific things. They keep Desmond on a path to fulfill destiny. It helps him to shape events towards the start of the time loop, in other words, getting Ben to turn the wheel back in 2004. He sees a flash of Locke's speech and tells Hurley who tells Charlie that he thinks that Desmond can see the future. Desmond makes then some eerie predictions about lightning then drowning. This is how Charlie discovers that his own destiny is to die. This prepares Charlie to sacrifice itself for the island. Desmond's visions lead him to find and save Naomi. Her survival leads to a plan to contact the freighter Charlie's mission is then to unjam the signal in the glass station. Only he could have accomplished this since the passcode was programmed by a musician It leads to the freighter's arrival and a good reason for Ben to turn the freezing wheel. If this didn't happen, that would have created a cataclysmic paradox because the Losties wouldn't have travel back in time to present the accident from destroying the world in 1977.

Even if someone else could have crak the code in the glass station, the seeds of suspicion about the freighter's intentions are sewed amongst the oceanic survivors because of Charlie's specific message to Desmond. This message sets the conflict of season 4. In early in season 3, Desmond has a vision of Charlie dying trying to save Claire. Desmond's vision of Charlie drowning trying to save Claire was not something that could have happen under those circumstances because Charlie was too far away. This vision prompted Desmond into action to intercede in what he thought was going to happen. Claire would have died and it would have take away Charlie's primary motivator to give up his own life at the end of the season. So Desmond isn't necessarly seeing the future but it's a catalyst that makes the future happens just like the dream Locke has in season 3 or the instincts that we see come to Jacob or even the man in black. The island shows people what they need to see or hear to make them to make choices. Desmond's final vision of Charlie's death and Claire being rescue is never shown to us. We had an entire episode of Desmond misunderstanding and misinterpretating his vision especially when he thought that Naomi was Penny. He get feelings and vibes of what might happen. If the man in black didn't interfere by taking the appearance of Christian Shepard, luring her away from the camp fire and even toleave Aaron behind, she would have been in that helicopter and the Oceanic 6 would have been the Oceanic 7. Well, 3 years later, she eventually leaves with a plane at the end of season 6. So Desmond's vision still was fulfilled in another way. Once again, that was a slight misinterpretation. The other theory that Desmond just didn't want to keep saving Charlie doesn't seem to hold because he was literally proposing to take Charlie's place on the Glass station.Mickail also didn't die until the grenade's explosion because he needed to fulfill his side of the destiny's equation.
