Top 5 Worst & Best Disney Sequels (Animated)
.
In Cinderella 2, Jennifer Hale stars as Cinderella and it's actually fine. But this movie was contrived and pointless. Everything in the prince's castle is perfect and happy. We basically just watch the mices tell stories about the exciting things happening in the castle, through it's just key jangling. We get a few more of the typical Disney princess eye rollers in this one as Cinderella learns how to be a princess. Which apparently involves dressing snooty, cooking snooty, looking down on peasants and basically destroying any egalitarian urges from her now elitist mindset. I know Cinderella is perhaps the most typical Disney princess but even Sofia The First is running rings around over this script. Sadly we got 2 of these tacky, dull first stories to trudge through. At least a positive part is that they tried to expand the character of Anastasia, the stepsister. This a major change in her character from the original but the trope of bad guys becoming good is one of my favourite tropes but overall Cinderella 2 is still a slow 90 minutes slog through 3 uninteresting cliched princess magic stories.
4th best Disney sequel : Bambi 2. This wasn't just a good sequel but also a sequel that Bambi needed. Technically it's a midquel. Some scenes hit hard with an emotional impact. It still have the occasional awkward Disney sequel moment but some of these moments are just golden. Bambi II stays true to the original Bambi. So much about Bambi II is about setting the atmosphere, that sense of melancholy the colors, the frightening moments, the joyous moments. There is much care put into every element of the sequel. The scenery's ambience is a beautiful match to the original. We rarely see a Disney sequel giving so much respect to the original version. A lot of bad Disney sequels treat their original movie counterpart like a broken ladder crushed under in the sequel's horrid weight. But Bambi II treats the original movie with an almost sacred respect. Good Disney movies use body language well, like Beauty and the Beast, they speak without using words. One of the only complain is that Bambi's father is a bit thick headed at the start and then we get the stereotypical unlikable bully character, Ronno who is quite annoying by times. The best word for Bambi II is graceful. Bambi II is not about story but about emotion. And Bambi II cares for and compliments those original emotions perfectly.
Mulan II is one of the worst Disney sequels.
On of the worst Disney sequels is undoubtly the Hunchback of Notre Dame II. This one is shudderingly bad. The most generic, sad and trite Disney sequel. Take that graphic, epic, bleak landscape of Notre Dame and turn it into a hokey, corny, oversaturated lump of bile. All that drama, complexity and brutality from the first movie and they get rid of that. They made it a safe, sickeningly, happy love story trudge. We've got random dancing and singing about love. This is a corny, stupid script. Even by Disney sequel standards this is very bad. Hearing these talented voice actors from the original spouting these generic garbage lines. Frollo was a villain so heartless, evil and cruel surpassed only by Satan himself as the darkest Disney villain of all time. They replaced him with Sarousch. The voice actor is okay but no one could save a role that stupid. Frollo burned cities in the name of his lust and God. This guy just tries to steal a bell. And this animation is just bad. To soil the name of the original Hunchback movie this badly is among the biggest botch ups if not the biggest Disney sequels ever managed.
Cinderella III : a twist in time, is in the other hand among the top Disney sequels. A twist in time is the perfect name for this sequel. Unlike most Disney sequels it's hard to tell what story twist could happen next. No a lot could have guess that Cinderella threequel, the definition of a generic Disney princess, could have been so creative and compelling. Cinderella, is once again voiced by Jennifer Hale. Cinderella is thrown back in time when the stepmother gets the fairy wand. That might sounds like a deviant fan fiction but they made it work well. Every actor for each voice works and many of the characters are given far more development than the original particularly Anastasia, the king and the prince. Anastasia's arc came full circle. Even Cinderella becomes more fleshed out as a character in this one. There is way more chemistry between Cinderella and the prince in this one. After the stepmother turns back in time, Cinderella infiltrates the castle, sneaks and infiltrates the fortress and outwits her stepmother. It's easy to see why a lot consider this as one of the best if not the best Disney sequel. It's probably the most gripping, charming, suspenseful and unpredictable of all the Disney sequels.
Jungle Book 2. It was nice to know more about the man's village and getting a glimpse of Mowgli's new life. There are some rehashes but the voice acting is top notch and we get some more creative settings of the ancient jungle like ancient ruins. Aladdin and the king of thieves. Robin Williams returning as a Genie helped the movie being one of the best Disney sequel. It's also a solid adventure about Aladdin meeting his dad with an interesting if muddled message, about accepting people don't really change. Fantasia 2000. It doesn't have near the mature majesty of the original but this is still above the usual standards of Disney sequels. Some of these song sequences were as beautiful as the originals.
Disney's worst sequel might be Belle's magical world. The cover is false advertising because the real animation is the worst. An animation cheap and ugly. Everything has dropped in quality so cataclysmically. The script sounds like it was written by a 7 year old fan fic writer. The story is so flimsy and pitiful that it wounds the original movie. Then we get a soulless rehash with Emma Watson sing talking. An amidst the nightmare of 0 effort pastels, scripts and cheesy furniture add ons. The story is basically a couple bickering for 90 minutes except even that is too generous and sophisticated generalization for this movie. Because it doesn't even sound like you are listening to a couple bickering about real problems. Beast will randomly be rude or act childish to Belle in such a pitiful way that it's more like watching a bunch of young kids pushing each other in a sandpit. What hurts about this movie is that the personality of the characters feels legitimatly erased. We are like watching some sort of Twilight Zone dream interpretation of the original movie. Belle's magical world is simply an anormaly to study. To be that bad requires concentrated efforts by the writers to purposely make it this bad. It's pointless and frustrating. It's just one big middle finger to the original movie from Disney themselves.
Peter Pan II : return to wonderland. It's one of the best Disney sequels if not the best for some people. A combination of exciting moments, magical moments, relatable characters and emotionally touching moments. It gave it moments of delight. It's cinematic, has beautiful animation and a compelling story about a child's struggle between fantasy and reality in the face of wars. It's the story of Wendy and her childrens facing the Second World War. Jane is having a little trouble believing in pixie dust after seeing dailyfires, bombing and detruction. Much like the movie Hook, the story focuses on the protagonist rediscovering that sense of childhood positivity. Jane is a relatable character. She is not at all stick in the mud. She is understandably practical because she has been facing a war every day. The lst boys might have been annoying by times in the original movie, here they are likable. What make the movie more epic is the incredible instrumental soundtrack. While the pop song in this one is quite forgettable, we mostly get the ambient music which is majestic and powerful. Hats off to Joel McNeely, the composer for this one. Even the comedy seems to work better. The squid somehow works better than the crocodile also. Peter Pan II is joyous, delightful and a cheerful ride. It captures energy and excitement even better than the original movie did. This sequel felt magic. Not a lot of Disney sequels have been able to do that. Peter Pan II is the kind of movie Disney sequels should strive to be.
