A Disney Villains Retrospective, Part 18: The Jungle Book Villains
Jungle book and the second jungle book were collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling published in 1894 and 1895. The majority of these stories followed the adventures of a boy named Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the indian jungle. As a baby Mowgli is raised by his parents when he is attacked by a tiger, Shere Khan. In the confusino the parents flee, leaving the infant behind. By the infant wanders into a wolf gun. Furious to be denied Mowgli as a meal, Shere Khan harbors the grudge against Mowgli as the boy grows older and learns the way of the jungle. Mowgli makes friends with the bander log, the jungle's monkeys despite being warned not. The monkeys want Mowgli to teach them the ways of man to help them being the most respected creatures of the jungle. They kidnap Mowgli but due to their forgetful careless nature, they soon forget why did they do so in the first place. Bagheera and Baloo seek the help of cava snake to save Mowgli from the cold layers, the abandoned human city the monkeys live in. Shere Khan meanwhile has been turning the younger wolves against Mowgli and the wolf leader Aquila. Mowgli steals fire from the man 's village and uses to frighten Khan and the enemy wolves. Realizing he has become more than animal, he heads down to the man's village as one of them while Kahn stalks around that village hellbent for revenge. With the help of some of the wolves, Mowgli starts a buffalo stampede and kills Shere Khan once and for all. But during his stay in the village, Mowgli makes another enemy, Boldeo, the village's arrogant chief hunter. Mowgli is the only one who calls him out about his exaggerated stories. When Boldeo finds Mowgli skinning what's left of Shere Khan after the stampede, he tries to take credit for the kill himself. Mowgli sticks a keel of the wolf on him in retaliation. The intention was merely to scare and it only works too well. The haunter accuses Mowgli of being a sorcerer and he finds himself expelled from the village.
But after that he finds out that his adopting parents are going to be executed by the village because being accused of being witchcraft. Angry, Mowgli gets his parents to safety and has his animal brethren to destroy the village in a few weeks. Back inthe jungle, his story continues. In one of them Kaa shows him a massive treasure hidden under the monkeys cold layers guarded by an old cobra. Mowgli doesn't understand the concept of money but takes a knife from the treasure ending up attracting several treasure seeking humans who will kill each other for the knife. Disturbed by the events, Mowgli returns the knife. In another story, Mowgli battles a pack of wild dogs. Finally he becomes restless and go back to live among his own kind not because he was driven out by tigers or wolves but by his own volition. Jungle Book was pitched to Disney by Bill Peet who had written and storyboarded their 2 previous films, the 101 dalmatians and the sword and stone. Peet's jungle book was closed and toned to the kipling original. Shere Khan and Buldeo villain wise would be the main heavies that Mowgli would face. In this version like the book the monkeys have a treasure hidden in their ancient city in which Mowgli sees no value in. Peet's first part is similar to the final version while the second half takes a left turn. Mowgli makes to the man village and like in the book makes an enemy of Buldeo. He calls out Buldeo's tales The boy grows fed up of the village and returns to the jungle followed by the hunger, forcing Mowgli to take him to the treasure. He hten plans to burn down the jungle, killing Mowgli and Shere Khan. Before he can do this, the gier leaps out and kills him. Mowgli grabs Buldeo's rigle and shoots him making him a hero in the jungle and in the village. Walt was initially on board with this but after looking everything they'd come up he realized that this wasn't the movie he wanted to make. It was too dark, too somber.
Decision was made to make the movie a fun lighter experience. Bill Peet shortly left after that unhappy with the turn of events. The movie cut Buldeo but kept the monkeys and Shere Khan. Kaa who just made a cameo in this version became a full fledged character This movie ended up with 3 unrelated villains : Shere Khan, Kaa and King Louie. Shere Khan is the final villain to appear to Mowgli In Kipling's book Shere Kahn was born with a bad leg and his mother called him lungry meaning lame one.Maybe because of this he carries an exaggerated sense of pride. His leg makes it difficult to catch prey so Khan often kills humans. The rest of the animals look down on Khan for this since it's against the lax of jungle. Some say it's also because the men will attack the jungle in retaliation. Tabaki is the closest thing he has to a friend, a brown nosing little jackal following him around. The oner eason he keeps targetting Mowgli in the book is because he didn't eat him as a baby. To Khan it's a matter of pride. The Disney version is generally more fearsome. In the book Khan is seen by the wolves more as a nuisance until he takes away Aquila's leadership. Disney made Khan the more fearsome predator of the jungle. Not even a pack of wolves would stand up against him. Rather than compensating, his arrogance feels well earned Want wanted a strnog confident tiger. Peet's Shere Khan had hatred for Mowgli but also to his enemy Buldeo as well. The two sings a song called the mighty hunters, stalking each other through the jungle while boasting about their eventual triumph over the other. Disney made some characters more comedic like Hoffy the elephant going from a noble leader to a buffoonish drill sergeant. Story notes from 1965 indicate that there were attempts to make Shere Khan more humorous as well. He takes pride in h is appearance, kept his coat nice by becoming vegetarian. He knows exactly how many calories are in a man depending on its size.
The final version of Khan is still funny but in a dry way. Shere Khan doesn't appear until the movie's final act. They do a wonderful job at building him up. For most of the film, Khan is a looming presence taken seriously by all the other animals. We just know that he is somewhere nearby potentially lurking behind any tree or inside any shrub. When he finally makes a physical appearance it doesn't feel like he popped out of nowhere. Most of animals in the jungle seem to dislike humans but Khan hates them the most. Because of their guns and fire they are the only thing more dangerous than Khan. In addition of fearing for his hide, Khan probably hates being reminded that he is not the apex predator. It doesn't matter to him that Mowgli doesn't have anything to do with the man's village. Considering Mowgli went to the village in the original book, perhaps Khan'ss fear were not totally unjustified. Although Shere Khan's fear of fire seems to be an open secret among the animals, he remains arrogant and very confident. His voice actor George Sanders delivers his lines in a very draw way. Known for often playing cynical cats he chats about hunting and killing Mowgli as if he is at a cocktail party. Khan doesn't want the animals to forget that Khan is above everyone else. SHere Khan's impressive baritone line was provided by studio singer Bill Lee. He is more known as Roger's singing voice in the 101 dalmatians. Or as captain von trapp's signing voice in the soud of music or Joseph Cable's singing voice in south Pacific. A great singer but ironically an unsung talent. Shere Khan ultimatly goes to blind panic when confronted with fire rather than being killed by a stampede like in the book or a rifle like in Bill Peet's version. They kept the tiger alive in Disney probably to keep things light and maybe they were already thinking about a sequel which was released only in 2003.
Kaa. The book version of Kaa was not a villain although still dangerous. Baloo and Bagheera approach Kaa to save Mowgli from the monkeys because Kaa was the only thing the monkeys feared. Kaa is old, respected and powerful. He almost single handedly wins the battle against the monkeys.Once he fended off the creatures he demonstrates his hypnotic powers doing what he calls the dance of the hunger of Kaa. Kaa moves his body in a way that entrances the monkeys into walking right into his open mouth. Baloo and Bagheera find themselves drawn to him as well and have to be snapped out by Mowgli. After this Kaa becomes a friend and ally to Mowgli. Kaa has an intricate knowledge of the jungle history due to his old age. When the older Mowgli finally leaves the jungle, Kaa joins Baloo and Bagheera in an emotionnal farewell. He appears in some cameos. The movie gave Kaa a more sinister role. Even the panther trembles when facing a hungry Kaa. For a moment he is put under a trance. Even if he is dangerous he can be also quite clownish. Animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston cited Kaa's flaw as being overconfident in himself. In the movie it's Kaa who gives himself to Bagheera. If Kaa had kept quiet he could have eat the man cub easily. Later on when Mowgli is alone, he takes his time to play with his food only for Shere Khan to interrupt him. Khan is unaffected by Kaa's hypnosis and seems to be the only animal the snake fears. Although Khan chats politely, the power dynamic is clear. However the reason why Kaa is also seen as a villain is that Kaa isn't doing it just for survival. He is taking pleasure in it. Sterling Holloway was the voice of Kaa. His distinct soft sweet voice was perfect for friendly characters with his only other somewhat villainous role being the Cheshire Cat. Kaa is an easy character to let your guard down around and that has been the mistake of many animals.

Pour le côté nostalgique :
Pinocchio
Bambi
La Belle au bois dormant
Sachant que Bambi et Pinocchio étaient mes 2 premiers Disney.
Kaa's hunting song " trust me " was salvage for many poppins like the magic compass.
They would have visited desert at a point and seen different mirages, appear and disappear, a song called the land of sand would accompany the scene When the compass diea was cut, they used the melody and wrote new lyrics for Kaa, adding many sounds putting emphasis on Kaa being a snake.
King Louie and the monkeys. In the Rudyard Kipling book the monkeys think of themselves as noble creatures but their scatterbrained nature prevent them from accomplishing any of the great deeds they claim to do. They didn't obey the laws of the jungle and wer elooked down by other creatures. They are loud, rude and generally annoying The movie made quite a deviation with Louie as a leader. Even if the king is smarter than the othre monkeys the idea that they had any form of government went against the idea of anarchy loving monkeys from the book Aside from having a king the monkeys seemed pretty in line with their book counterparts. Their boastful song solidify their unwarranted egos. King Louie, n orang moutan was originally portrayed as a harsh and unreasonable character. For the movie the Sherman brothers had the idea to make Louie and his minkeys a group of party animals and Louie is the biggest partie animal of all. Louie comes off as a friendly guy and host. He will offer you more bananas than you could possibly stomach. He will entertain you, sing and dance. Being a kid isn't good enough, Louie wants power to learn how to use fire or as most of the jungle calls it, the red flower. Since he was raised by wolves, Mowgli has no idea about how to make fire. It's never specified what Louie planned to do with the fire but I imagine he wants to lord it other the top animals and prove that he is on top. Louie might not be evil but he is still selfish and careless.
Originally they had Louis Armstrong in mind for the voice but Walt thought that casting a black man as an ape could come across as offensive so the Sherman brothers approach the night club performer Louis Prima. Their performance was apparently deemed too wild and the version we have in the movie is dialed down a bit.
The sequel picks up a few months after the end of the first movie The news of SHere Khan's humiliation has spread through the jungle. Although the tiger is fine physically, his pride has been wounded and the only solution in his eyes is to sneak into the man's village and kill Mowgli. Tony Jay replaces George Sanders Both did wonders in this role At several points a vulture named lucky incessantly mocks the tiger. At the end, Khan finds himself trapped in a ruined temple inexplicably surrounded by lava and the vulture shows up to mock him. Kaa is now voiced by Jim Cummings. Kaa is as opportunistic as ever. This time he mostly exists to get clobbered There were a few comics printed although some of them not in english. Shere Khan appears quite a lot but in the same time the comics don't overuse him. However if you let him be defeated too many in silly ways, he stops being a threat. It's not rare to see Kaa squeeze Mowgli only to fail by sheer luck. As for Louie, a few stories made him a harsher, more aggressive character for the most part though the comics got Louie's personality perfectly In one story Louie is frustrated that no one calls him King Louie. Louie finds a hidden treasure in his temple complete with a crown. Unfortunatly Kaa also found the treasure. Louie and his monkeys proved to be no match for the snake. When Mowgli and Baloo refused to help him, Louie kidnapped Shanti to force Mowgli's help. The whole time Louie remains remains cheerful and friendly. Never once Louie considers the feelings of anyone else. A couple of comics also shows what happens if Louiz gets access to fire and predictably it's nothing good. In one comic he loses control of fire and panics and in another one he uses it to throw his way around both time resulting in potential danger that the elephants have to put out and both times Louiz doesn't appear to learn much.
There is another villain that doesn't appear in the Disney movie : Old Mugger the crocodile who also tried to eat Mowgli repeatedly. His personality wa never quite as developped as the other characters At a few times he teamed with Kaa and Shere Khan to get Mowgli once and for all. A mugger crocodile appeared in one of the Kipling's jungle book stories but it wasn't a standlone chapter not related to Mowgli and his adventures. The jungle book video game was inspired A platform game based on the movie was released in 1994 for several consoles. Both from Nintendo and Sega. Despite their differences they are generally similar. Kaa, Louie and Shere Khan all act as bosses in that order. Kaa seemingly longer than ever menaces you in the treetops firing hypnotic beams at you. Defeating him will send him crashing to the ground like in the movie. King Louie's battle is clever.Louie apes your own attacks. He uses your weapons, bananas and coconuts against you. Shere Khan of course is the final boss Some versions have you attack him normally while other make it so that a special fire attack will defeat the tiger. In various levels monkeys are natural pick for enemies spot. In a few versions of the game they also make a boss fight appearing between Kaa and Louie's battles. 3 monkeys hide behind an enormous mask and use it as a shield. Jungle book rhythm and groove is a stranger game. It's for playstation and essentially a CGI retelling of the first movie. Almost every character challenges Mowgli to a dance off Even if Quackshot was not based on the jungle book, Shere Khan and Kaa make appearance here. Donald Duck is on his way to find a treasure before Pete. On his way he finds a tiger boss which looks like Shere Khan. Only difference is that this one can also breathe fire. Kaa is not a boss but appears as the basis for an enemy.
Jungle book characters obviously appear at Disney Parks even if Shere Khan and Kaa are quite rare. In the eyes of the team park Louiz is not a villain and most of his appearances and live shows have a friendly Louie. Louie and Kaa are both part of the orchestra in the Mickey Mouse review with an animatronic car somehow playing his own tail like a flute. In the Disneyland version of fantasmic, a larger than life Kaa slithers around in the jungle section. Unlike most of villains he doesn't menace Mickey in any way and just seems to be hanging out. Louie and his monkeys also appear happy to join to the party. In Shanghai Disneyland, Kaa has a place in the garden of the 12 friends, on masaics based on chinese zodiac with Kaa representing the snake. The major attraction was a live show that opened in the animal kingdom. A stage version of the movie with the characters being either actors either large puppets. Louie and the monkeys appear. SHere Khan performed a pre recorded audio by Toni Jay. Only Kaa was missing. Jungle also received its own professionnal staged musical. In 2013 the show had tryouts in Chicago and Boston. Their cartoon counterpart are plenty theatrical. Kaa has some puppetry effect but the bulk of the performance comes from the visible actors.

A Disney Villains Retrospective, Part 16: Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians)
The great dog robbery was a serialized story by Dodie Smith. that originally ran in women's day magazine during 1956. It was then published as a stnadalone book, the 101 dalmatians. In the original story, Pongo and Missis have a litter of 15 puppies. On acquaintance of the family, the very eccentric Cruella De Vil takes interest in the puppies. Cruella intends to make a coat out of dalmatians fur and has the puppies kidnapped Pongo and Misses set out to rescue the puppies and end up saving not only their 15 childrens but also 82 other puppies that Cruella has aquired Cruella's last name is played on the word devil and the novel fully embraces this. Although Cruella's first love will always be animal furs, the book also gives her an obsession with fire and pepper. She watches her fireplace like an excited child and at one point stops her search for the puppies to cheer as a bakery catches fire. She puts pepper on all her food and she tries to walk off with one of the puppies, he bites her and then informs his siblings that she even tastes like pepper. Her ancestral home is nicknamed hell hall by the locals. She also has an affinity for drowing animals. When she sees the spotless dalmatian newborns she assumes that they are defective and recommends the dearly surroundings. SHe goes on to say that her persian cat had several litters of kittens with alley cats, meaning they are not purebreds and are thus worthless. Cruella has drown her kittens. For this reason the cat ends up befriending the dalmatians. Cruella has a husband in the book who is a successful furrier. This makes sense since Cruella doesn't really loves him but only the furs he provides her with. Everyone seems to pity the spineless man since being married to Cruella is bound to be an unpleasant experience. Cruella's cat assure the dalmatians that he doesn't deserve any sympathy. In other words she is strong and bad, he is weak and bad.
when it came to adaptaing this on Disney, some characters got changed or dropped. Mr and Mrs Dearly became Roger and Anita Radcliffe. The mother dalmatian was renamed Perdita. Confusingly there was a separate dalmatian mother named Perdita in the book who was dropped from the movie but it was decided that Perdita was a better name than Misses. Cruella's cat and husband were also both dropped to leave more of the spotlight for Cruella herself.. The 101 dalmatians movie that went unused was called the creation of Cruella De Vil. Bill Peet worked extensively on the story, writing the script and doing many of the storyboards. Mark Davis came up with the original character design. In the original book's illustrations, Cruella looks rather pretty rather than have a tall wicked queen type. Davis drew her as a living squeleton with a skull like face. Her body contrasted with her enormous fur coat. She is always accompanied by a trail disgusting green smoke from her cigarettes. Everything about her id delightfully off kilter, with her demonic looking like telephone. Cruella's mannerism and voice were partially inspired by the actress Tallulah Bankhead. Mark Davis also modelled her partially after a women he knew ans was not fond. Another crucial part of Cruella is her voice. Walt Disney had originally asked Lisa Davis Waltz to read for the role. Davis could apparently do a jaja gabor impression and that was the initial direction Walt had in mind. After reading a few takes, After a few takes, Davis realized that Cruella was not the role for her and asked to read for Anita. it ended up being the right call because she got the part. The role of Cruella eventually went to Betty Lou Gerson who previous has done the opening narration for DIsney Cinderella Cruella is still funny but Gerson's performance suggests a real malice behind her words. Those aren't empty threats. If Cruella has designs on you, you are in trouble.
2 standing traits of personality from Cruella that quickly appear are impulse and selfishness. She expects the Radcliffe to hand to her the puppies when she proposes to buy them without any further question. When they refuse, she takes it as a personal insult. She can't understand why they would want to keep the puppies if they are not going to make coats out of them. In Cruella's mind, they are otherwise useless. Even though Cruella has more than enough dogs taken from elsewhere, she makes a point about stealind their puppies because they dared to tell her no. This impulsivness ends up working against Cruella since stealing puppies ends up potentially drawing the police over her fur racket. That means that Cruella needs the coats to be made sooner than later so she won't get caught with stolen dogs as evidence which means that the dogs will not be grown enough which means less coats than she expected. During the climax of the movie during the chasing scene of the truck, she has no plan at that point, she just wants to drive that truck off the road. Judging by the height of the hill, if Cruella crashed the truck, there probably wouldn't be any salvageable fur for her coats. At this point it's Cruella's pride that has been wounded and she is ready to sacrifice her original plan to get any form or revenge. For this despite being built like a twig, Cruella is quite intimidating. Her own henchman crawler in fear when she gets angry. Maleficient is evil for the sake of being evil. She can only enjoy her life by making the other lifes miserable. Cruellla in the other hand doesn't care about how happy or sad she makes people with her actions. She puts herself first and if someone else suffers that's their problem. Cruella's vindictiveness, selfishness and cruelty are plausible. Cruella also needs some other to do the dirty work and possibly take the fall for her if they get caught. She has Jasper voiced by J. Pat O'Malley and Horace voiced by Frederick Worlock.
Like Cruella, the brothers are well designed, looking as shifty as possible. Their book coutnerpart named Jasper and Saul play rather a small role in the story, being only present at the scenes in the hell hall. In the movie they are more proactive, stalking the escaped dalmatians alongside Cruella. The brothers appear to be pretty crooks for the most part. They fit the mold quite nicely. They are competent to pull the initial theft off, threatening enough to pose actual danger for the puppies but still bungling enough to let them get away and not overshadow Cruella. While both of them are wicked, the brain here is Jasper who is the schemer. Horace meanwhile speaks much more slowly and appears to just be going along with whatever his brother does. He does catch on the dog's tricks like rolling in soot to disguise themselves or walking on ice to avoid leaving paw prints. Jasper considers himself too rational to imagine dogs being this clever. There is another villain, Dirty Dawson who never is a menace for the puppies since he is part of an actual TV show the puppies watch " the thunderebolt adventure hour ". Justice thunderbolt represents the hero archetype of the time period. Lawson is the archetype of the western bandit. His booming laugher is provided by Paul Frees. It was added for the movie. However, Jasper and Horace's favourite show, " what's my crime " was actually in the book as well. Watch my crime is a spoof of the game show " what's my line ". 2 of the crime contestants were actually voiced by the villain's voice actors. Gerson voiced Miss Birdwell and Frederick Warlock voiced Inspector Graves. Meanwhile J. Pat O'Malley also voices the colonel. In the comic adaptation, the batons watch thunderbolt like the puppies. Unlike the puppies, they root for Dirty Dawson. Roger have a catchy bluesy number about how a terrible person Cruella is. By the end of the movie that has been so popular that that was sung on the radio.
The song became a hit even outside of the movie. Most of people probably don't remmeber the 2 other songs offhand. Songwriter Mel Levenwrote 2 other Cruella songs before settling with the one we know. The song repeats cruel and devil ad nauseum. The other song he wrote was a non sense song about how everyone hates Cruella. It's similar in tone to tbe bluesy song but it has more of a childish schoolyard feeling. Jasper and Horace also had a song written for them. It was a drinking song called " Don't buy a parrot from a sailor because all them birds say embarrassing words. " The movie doesn't seem to suffer from having lost this one. A lot of media had been related to the 101 dalmatians. We had a sequel, a live action remake, its sequel, a prequel, and 2 animated series and before any of them came out, Cruella was planned to be the villain in the Rescuers. Cruella was switched to Madame Medusa. The 101 dalmatians would get a direct sequel in 2003. At the end of the first movie the fate of the villains is left somewhat unclear. The sequel reveals that the three of them were arrested shortly after. Cruella has restraining order against her from the Radcliffe and she is on probation : no furs. Horace and Jasper were sent to jail presumably because they have a bigger rap sheet than Cruella. Cruella is now voiced by Susanne Blakeslee in most of the post movie appearances. Horace was voiced by Maurice LaMarche while Jasper was voiced by Jeff Bennett. In the movie, Cruella sees a modern art piece, a single black spot on a white canvas. Here it becomes clear how deep seated her obsession is. She strikes up an odd friendship with an eccentric artist, Lars, voiced by Martin Short. He doesn't realize yet how bad she is until she re steals all the puppies with the intention of turning them into a gruesome art project. Once Lars sees her true nature, he refuses to have anything to do with her.

Post avant : ça compte pas car c'est Pixar.
As for Jasper and Horace, Cruella bailed them out.
Dirty Dawson is back voiced by Jim Cummings. We meet Thunderbolt's loyal sidekick little lightning voiced by Jason Alexander. Initially Little Lightning appears as loyal. Thunderbolt gets the fame, the glory and all the fans. Plus he is insufferable. Little Lightning lies to Thunderbolt, telling that the writers plan on killing his character off. His plan is to have Thunderbolt run off to score some good press by doing some actual heroics. When he is off on his folly, Lightning can become the new star. However Lightning finds out that Thunderbolt will actually become a hero a save the stolen puppies, he makes sure to make a stop to it. Lightning encourages Thunderbolt to blindly charge into battle which gets him and Patch caught by Cruella. Then he leaves the puppies to be slaughtered in order to further his own career. Ultimatly, Lightning is mistaken for an accomplice of Cruella and arrested. Cruella meanwhile is thrown into an asylum. Horace and Jasper actually decide too reform and sell clothes themselves, but no fur. The 101 dalmatians also received one of the first live action remake in 1996. Gleen Close was portraying Cruella De Vil. Cruella is here a high profile fashion designer running her own company, the house of Devil. Anita is no longer a school acquaintance but one of Cruella's top employees. Cruella seem to have a possessive obsession towards Anita. Anita works for Cruella so Cruella thinks that she owns Anita. Anita mentions that she doesn't want to work elsewhere but that if she got married, that could possibly change. When Anita marries Roger, Cruella takes it as a personal betrayal. Just like in the Disney movie, Cruella also takes offense in not being able to buy the puppies. Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams are playing Jasper and Horace. Cruella also has a third henchman, Mr Skinner, played by John Shrapnel. According to Jasper, a dog tore his throat open when he was a child, leaving him scarred and mute.
It would explain Skinner's willingness to kill so many puppies. Skinner also steals and skins an endangered tiger specie for Cruella. Once the police finds the tiger in her house, she isin hot water. The screenplay was by John Hugues who also wrote the first 3 " Home Alone " movies. The final section of the movie is almost exclusively a montage of the criminals getting painfully tricked by the animals. In 2000, the remake would receive its own sequel : " The 102 dalmatians ". After years, Cruella seems to have been rehabilitated after extensive experimental procedures. She became a perky friendly animal lover who would rather being called Ella. However hearing certain loud noises revert the subject back to their old selves. When Cruella hears Big Ben, she starts seeing spots once more. With the help of her stressed out servant Alonso played by Tim McInnerny, who had a smaller part in the first movie, Cruella recruits a remplacement for Mr Skinner with Jean Pierre Lapels played by Gérard Depardieu, a fashion designer almost as crazy as Cruella herself. They intend to take the puppies to lapel sweatshop in Paris and make that coat. The first live action movie's tone was of a whimsical modern day fairy tale. The sequel's tone in the other hand is of an insane fever dream. The movie manages to look like more of a cartonn than the animated original. Cruella had her own live show in France's Disney studios park titled " Star and Cruella De Vil ". On a spotty soud stage, two hapless assistants try to film a movie about and star and Cruella but unsurprisingly find difficult to work with. Some guests would be callled to help act out several parts including as one of the badens. This Cruella was mild after Gleen Close. Animated version of Cruella, Jasper and Horace were seen in the interactive sorceress of magic kingdom game where Hadès want to take over Disney world and request Cruella's help in securing main street. If they succeed she will get her coveted dalmatian coat.
Then there was the movie " Cruella " in 2021. It seems like the movie wanted to turn Cruella into a badass antihero kind of character. I feel like it would have been better if it was an unrelated Cruella inspired character. Even if Emma Stone is good in her role, it doesn't look like Cruella. The movie serves as an origin story for Cruella starting all the way back at her birth with her real name being Estella. According to the book, black and white is her natural hair color so that's nice that they kept these colors even as a kid. Estella has a dark side named Cruella. Early on in the movie, her mother is killed by a pack of CGI dalmatians. A lot assumed this was the reason why Cruella hated animals but that was not the case. We follow Estrella's life as she climbs up the way through London's fashion scene all while trying to take down the baroness, the high profile fashionista who killed her mother. During this, Estrella's bad side, Cruella, continues to bubble to the surface. The baroness played by Emma Thompson is quite fun and closer to the original Cruella than the Emma Stone one. Jasper and Horace played by Joel Fry and Walter Hauser are on hand as always. This time they know Estrella sinc echildhood. They are also literal thieves ranging from pietty thefts to full on heists. The movie won an academy award for its costume design. One of the reason that still didn't work that well is that the original Cruella act like the kind of Cruella born into luxury with that entitlement coming from decades of being spoiled and stepping on others. In this movie Cruella is never overly cruel to anyone who doesn't deserve it. Jasper and Horace are worse but even then it's mostly done for survival. The evil acts she committs are solely aimed at the baroness for revenge. Just like the live action remake " Maleficent, " we never really get to see her evil. This movie has been compared to the movie " the joker " for that reason.

Top 5 Worst & Best Forgotten Disney Sequels (Animated)
Jungle Book 2 has a good heart behind it. Released 36 years after the original movie, the sequel seems pointless but i would argue that Baloo and Mowgli get a bit more closure in their goodbye this time. Even if it's mid, it's enriched the original characters. Mowgli is still a trouble maker, Shere Khan still a menace, Baloo still a carefree rule breaker and Kaa as sneaky as ever. We get to learn about the mysterious girl Mowgli followed at the village. Some however could say that sequel was unimaginative and uninventive that was just about Mowgli missing Baloo and visiting the jungle. It feels a lot like an affectionate fan fiction with pleasant animation. Mowgli and Shanti have established a sort of mutual child crush. Predictably however, Mowgli decides that the man village's life has too many chores and responsabilities and runs off back to the jungle. Of course after, Mowgli decides that he misses some of his humans fellow after all. But first he has to meander about uncertain of what to do in the jungle for 70 minutes. The problem is that once we step out of the village, most of the jungle scene feels like a remake of the original. As pandering as the sequel feels, it's still likable. The clean animation and character filled voice makes it pleasant enough.
Aladin and the king of thives was given the best budget of the 2 sequels and the bes tof all is that Robin Williams returned in his role as the Genie. The third movie is based on Alibaba and the 40 thieves which is a good choice. The return of Jafar ahd none of the budget but all the spectacle and excitement. Aladdin and the king of thieves feels more high budget yet ho hum spectacle. The story is basically Aladdin and Jasmin getting married. But their wedding is interrupted by an old man voiced by John Ryes Davies. He turns out to be essentially Alibaba and his 40 thieves. Father son bonding, betrayal and confusion ensues. Along with a great plot about a great mystical artefact called the hand of Midas which turns anything to gold. We finish with a sweet goodbye and lots of good chuckles from the Geni in between. While Aladdin's family issues are pretty legitimate, they don't exactly make for a suspensful story to me but the Genie does light up the low spectacle, stealing the spotlight. It was still a solid a and satisfying way to end this trilogy.
Tarzan and Jane is one of the worst forgotten sequel. We have a Tarzan scene set in the future. What we see is 3 clumsily stuck together Tarzan TV pilots. With Jane reminiscing with the animals since it's apparently Tarzan and her 1 year anniversary. It reminds me of Cinderella 2 with harmless stories of mostly inconsequential fluff like their minor marriage quarrels, or introducing Tarzan to Jane's friends. Or Tarzan helping some islands visitors find diamonds. Or Jane going on on a picnic. Some of our minor characters can run on the annoying side like Jane's friends who can be over bearing. At least the animation is better than the Aladdin TV series. The voice acting are okay. At the end, the biggest plus in the movie is seeing the relation between Tarzan and Jane. But the movie was mostly tedious, unrelated island stories.
Pocahontas II has the opposite problem of Jungle Book 2. Instead of having a nothing story that was vell executed we have an interesting story that was abysmally executed. The main story is about Pocahontas being sent off as a peace maker to meet the king of England. If Pocahontas doesn't act civilized in the royal court, the king will declare war on the Powhantan tribe. How did they manage to make Pocahontas travelling to England to be a peace diplomat to the king so dull? The pace is slow. For a long time we just get a boat to look at, dresses to look at, we get to watch every step... Then we watch her dancing. Everything happens in such a snail pace. Despite Pocahontas's voice actor, Irene Bedard, still having a beautiful singing voice. these songs are muddled and forgettable. Sounding more like chammering and yammering that could be kind of considered melodic? At a point all the voice actors start singing and talking over one another in one big, confusing mishmash. By the end of the day we still have no idea what the Ratcliffe's incentive was. There is no deeper complexity or relateability to him. He just wants gold. Apparently he is convinced that the entire senate of England will buy into it, but then Pocahontas manages to convince the king that they don't have gold. The relationship between Pocahontas and John Smith was one of the best romance and it was one of the driving factor in the previous movie. John Smith gets here sidelined in the movie. He cames back at the end of the movie out of nowhere, does some shoddily animated fighting then basically gets snubbed by Pocahontas in the ending. These 2 move on without making look like they cared about each other at the first place.
Mickey's house of villains. This is a follow up that Mickey's magical Christmas movie except with a Hallowen theme instead of Christmas. It's Mickey and all the Disney characters watching through some Hallowen shorts. But then every single Disney villaintakes over the joint and tosses Mickey out. Many of the shorts themselves are kind of a low budget Fantasia with Mickey. They also include some good Mickey, Donald and Goody shorts. The only problem is that the in between scenes have a bad animation budget. But not only the comedy in the shorts is good, but unlike in Scooby Doo where we continuously run away from ghosts, here they fight back and try to outwit the ghosts. Mickey's mechanical house is a good short. With John Cleese as the narrator It's story is minimalist yet smart. Its quaint art style is a beautiful combination of old and new. Overall this movie is a fine sequel packed with spooky, light hearted romps with Mickey with some cheesy but interesting transitions segments in between.
Atlanti's : Milo's Return. There are some creative ideas and the original movie had stunning animation. But here the animation is so cheap. A collection of failed plots that were flimsily slapped together andthen called a sequel. The animation is choppy and downright goofy at times. Voices like Michael J Fox are a pretty tough act to follow for Tidus for " Final Fantasy X ". Milo's return was originally the first three episodes of a sequel series that was never completed, called Atlantis. Each episode takes part in a different part of the world that ties loosely at best to Atlantis. The first story is about a massive sea monster destroying ships in Norway. The mysterious build up of the story has the mysterious fellow controlling the Kraken + the people. But they dump this story in favor of going to Arizona to talk with a shop keeper who sells artifacts. These stories are muddled, short lived and confusing.

Why Pixar's Up Is a Forgotten Masterpiece
The idea of adventure first brings Carl and Ellie together. Ellie's first words in the moving is paraphrasing Muntz's words from the movie she presumably watched just like Carl ' adventure is out there " It's what she tells to Carl from the start and even when she is not physically present anymore. Despite this, their personalities differ on how they follow through on this love. Carl is a dreamer happy to merely fantasize to himself about the thought of adventure. Though he is lured by the charm of adventure, he is ultimatly too afraid of taking the risk that might end up hurting him. When Ellie first meets him, he is timid, hesitant and passive. Ellie is the opposite. She is impulsive, decisive and takes every opportunity for adventure she can grasp. This influence on Carl sees him start to act on his desires too. Though adventuring may sometimes hurt, Ellie encourages Carl to never stop trying. This is what makes their marriage works. The coming together of 2 contrasting types of people bound by the same goal. The recurring imagery is the use of ballons. It's Carl's ballon that first sends him on adventure with Ellie. As he is recovering, it's a ballon that Ellie floats into his room to cheer him up with " spirit of adventure " written on it. As they grow older, Carl runs a ballon stand and so ballons become a physical symbol for the spirit of adventure. While Carl and Ellie's marriage is thriving ballons are a frequent sight reflecing the buoyant joy in both their lives. Beside their visual appeal, ballons are the perfect fit for the childlike belief in adventure that Ellie holds. They are simple, pure and if you let them they will soar without limit. Ellie's illness and eventual death is the first turning point of the film. Carl is left with those ballons, once a symbol of joy and now a hollow representation of emptiness in his life.
2 other consistent symbols appear. Obviously the house itself but more boardly we see Carl's physical attachment to the objects inside the house. He sees them as some sort of manifestation of Ellie herself. He fixates on the only thing he has left of her : the houes they made, the adventure's book she gave to him, the furnitures in the house like the chairs they used to sit in. He treats these objects as companions and speaks to the house as if it was Ellie. So what Carl try resisting from having his mouse turned into a mole, we don't have an old man not wanting chance but rather a broken husband unable to let go of his wife's death. Carl's idea of adventuring is inseparably tied to Ellie. He has no desire for adventure any further without her. That is until Russell comes into screen. It's the fear of him being sent to a retirement home that ultimatly also spurs Carl to up and lift his house. Russell just like Carl misses something he needs to fulfill. Russell's sach and that one final empty spot is another symbol. A metaphorical gap in his life left by his father who once bonded with Russell over their love for the outdoors but now is barely around anymore. His needs for the badge represents him wanting his father spending time with him knowing he would have come to represent Russell with his final badge. Carl's goal is to finish what Ellie started and fulfilling her dream to go to the Paradise Falls. That's why it's so important to take his house with him because in his mind, it's a final resting place for her and presumably his own. Carl had no return plan which is why Russell's presence is important : he gives Carl a reason to return, to go on.
