How Luis Enrique's PSG Broke Inter Milan in 10 Minutes

On paper PSG was in 4 3 3 but when in possession, typically are in a back 3 with Mendes, Pacho and Marquihos with Hakimi pushing forward to join the attack. Vitinha acted as the deepest midfielder, as the deep lying playmaker, facilitating progression. Compared to the season before, PSG was less rigid and less positional. Guardiola was the leader of positional football. But in 2025, Luis Enrique allowed more positional rotations and freedom in positioning. Key is understanding the 5 vertical lines on the pitch. PSG players are free to rotate as long as all the 5 vertical lines are occupied. Enrique used the concept of anchors, pinners and floaters, light positional roles that guide how players move within the structure. Anchors are the players forming the base of the build up. Pivot, one player, the connector, usually Vitinha. Pinner, wide players holding the width this match often kvara on the left and Hakimi or Doué on the right. Then floaters, free players rotating to find the ball, mostly Mendes, the midfielders and Dembélé as the false 9. PSG often build in a 3 1 with Mendes, Pacho and Marquinhos with Vitinha as the pivot but it can change. Sometimes it was Vitinha, Pacho and Marquinhos with Neves as the pivot. Inter Milan often relied on man to man marking and defending compact. PSG made it lmost impossible to do so. Many players were occupying many different spaces at different times. Inter's game plan was more rigid, predictable and man oriented. Their defensive effectiveness so far has been about execution, not complexity. The 2 strikers Thuram and Martinez were responsible for dealing with PSG's build structure and mainly just shifted from side to side to prevent central progression with either Barella or Mkhiraryan trying to go to Vintinha depending on where the ball was. As long as Inter's midfield were matched up against PSG's midfield it wasn't wrong. Inter Milan knew that PSG's right side would be difficult to handle with Hakimi pushing high.
So Bastoni and Di Marco knew they had to be disciplined with Doué and Hakimi. PSG were able to rotate players to build at will, rotating between Mendes and Hakimi as the extra player on the flank. Inter Milan had a wrong read on PSG. When Hakimi rotated into the 3 2 structure, Mendes pushed up. Di Marco would follow Hakimi all the way up the pitch. This would leave Bastoni isolated 1 v 1 on the wing against Doué out wide in an area where he is not at his best, also vacating a huge space behind him. PSG consistently tried to pull out Inter Milan's 3 center backs, confuse them, stretching them and exploit the spaces they would leave behind. Hakimi was flowing through all phases of the build up.
