Vidéo YouTubeEven after the success of the Rhineland early 1926, Hitler had a stressfull time in 1936. His chauffeur Julius Shrek had passed away. Emil Maurice, his old chauffeur was sent off Hitler's circule after trying to secude Hitler's niece. His doctors proscribed him some pills. Eventually he managed to settle him somewhat of a decent schedule. At the chancellery at night he would disappear into his bedroom. The only decoration was a portrait of his mum on the wall. In the morning he would shave and dress himself before emerging where he would then meet Carl Krauss, his valet. His breakfast consisted usually of 2 cups of milk, some chocolate also. Next weeks, Hitler didn't show signs that his health was improving. He was suffering from a high buzzing soud in his left ear which was troubling him greatly. His doctors advised to head off on vacation to his mountain retreat. Next months he would spend as much time as possible there. 22 JUly, Hitler's peace would be disturbed by 2 Germans having a letter from a Spanish General named Francisco Franco. In this letter, Franco ask for the Fuhrer's asdsistance in getting his army in Africa out of Morocco and across the strait of Gibraltar. Hitler summoned Goering and both agreed that it was in their best interest to support Franco for a variety of reasons. It was an occasion of testing the young Luftwaffe.
And by doing so, they would crush the reds, preventing the spread of communism. Hitler himself thought it was his duty to stop the spread of communism in Europe. He assumed that if Spain falled, then France, who already had a leftist regime with communists in the government, would be next. He did have a serious moral dilemma at helping Franco at the beginning however. The troops transporting from Morocco weren't just Spanish but local too. These troops were known for their extrem brutality. For example in Asterian miners strike of 1934 when they were brought to quell the strike, they frequently tortured prisonners and hacked them to death. Many of them were executed by Spaniards for their crimes. At the end Hitler was right and much like it happened in the Rhineland when french colonail troops had moved in, Spanish colonial troops unleashed a wave of sexual crimes and extreme violence on the unfortunate spanish population. IN the next years of civil war, Hitler's most important motivation for intervening was much closer to home. Austriaable to maintain his shaky independance against the population's wish. Due to the Austrian's governement relationship with Mussolini, Mussolini had draw a line in the sand several times. For him Austria was his sphere of influence and his buffer state against the north. The Austrian catholic regime was more than happy to get along with this if it meant protecting their unique Austrian culture instead of being swalloed by Hitler's united Germany.Mussolini had opposed Hitler's turn up at every moment until now but lately with the Ethiopian fiasco he had poisoned his relationship with the Allies. Hitler reasoned he could put the final nail in the coffin.
He could put the final nail in the cofffin if he made sure the rebellion in Spain got off the ground. Mussolini would be bogged down in a lenghty civil war which for him had 2 benefits : the annihilaiton of any good will be left between the allies and Italy. And the Italians would be themselves weaken themselves on the battlefield leaving them in Nova position to resist Hitler's move in Austria. Hitler took a step further. While the majority of assistants went to the nationalistsIt didn't only go to them. Hitler didn't want a short war, but a long, drawn out one. Italian fascism must be blood white in Spain. For example just 1 shipment of supply in 1 october of 1936 the the republicans. Franco's enemies were over 19 000 guns, 10 000 machine guns and 20 million bullets. Obviously Hitler still wanted the reds to loose. So he made sure they were given the oldest guns possible inr order to delay their defeat, not to avoid it. It must remember that it was his part for the course in the dirty game of foreign policy. At the end of the day, Hitler still was an admirer of Mussolini. But the love was never been returned for almost a decade at this point. Mussolini had talked in Hitler's back and opposed him despite all this. Hitler left and Mussolini misguided. On 25th October of 1936, Mussolini and Hitler signed a treaty of friendship in which they promised to pursue a common foreign policy later known as the Rome Berlin axis. This so called common foreign policy certainly didn't include Austria however. As Hitler kept uphis policy of weakening Italy despite the sincere talk of friendship. The blocks we all know in WW2 started to put solidly into place. Hitler's dreamed alliance was not Italy but with England. Carl Wilhem Krause, Hitler's bodyguard, in an interview, would recall :
" Hitler wanted especially to be on good terms with England. No one could control colonies like England. They could with just one hadn control millions of people. " The English know how to do that. "
He said about the Germany Italy alliance that the best soldiers had to go with the worst soldiers. He meant of course the Italians. He said that they had the romans but that they don't have any romans now. In 1931, 2 years before Hitler took power, Berlin had beat Barcelona to host the Olympic games. It was a golden opportunity for Germany to show himself in the world stage. The city was cleaned up a little bit for the international audience. Some antisemitic papers were removed from their stands. Any reference to the Nuremberg law was taken down. 1st August was the opening ceremony and the clear blue sky was perfect for the occasion. Hitler led the parade to the stadium, protected by 40 000 brown shirts. When they arrived, the Fuhrer stepped into the biggest stadium of the entire world followed by Boris of Bulgaria, the crown prince of Sweden, Greence and Italy as well as Mussolini''s The orchestra blasted Deutschland Uber Alles. And then the olympic hymn. 110 000 watched entousiastically and cheered when the Fuhrer came into sigh and took his place into the stands. Most of the delegation used the olympic salute. However the Austrians used the occasion to modify it to a nazi salute. The greatest applause was for the french who also had a romanesque salute as opposed to the Olympic one. The least applause was for the Americans who arrived without enthousiasm. Germany ended up winning a resounding victory. Victory both in the sportive sense and in the propaganda sense. The Germans took home 101 medals including 38 gold medals. With 57 medals in second place, the Americans managed barely half of it, 24 of them being gold. The most famous story is Jesse Owens, the African american who took many golds medals; Hitler was unable to greet every winnerof every event and didn't end up meeting Owens properly. This was painted as a racist snub by Hitler. The reality could not have been further from the truth.
Owens said :" When I passed the chancellor, he arose, waved his hand at me and I waved back at him. The writers showed a bad taste at criticizing the man of the hour in Germany. " In fact, despite winning 4 gold medals, he wasn't even invited to the White House. He was largely ignored at his return to the USA. Owens also remarked that the greatest ovations he had received in his life were from the crowd in Berlin. It's also said that Hitler wanted the games to be a display of the Aryan superiority. And that Owens destroyed the plan by upstaging everyone. It's not the case since not only Germany won first first in gold medal ranking by a large margin but Hitler saw as many games as he could within the confins of his busy shedule. He was glued with the passion of a schoolboy watchin his favourite sport teams. On 16th AUgust, the Games were brought to a close. The visitors left the game impressed by Hitler's Berlin and he couldn't have ask for a better advertisement for his beloved Germany. The one elected to organize the Olympic village was Wolfgang Fernster, a jew. However before the games he was dismissed because " Farnster didn't act with the necessary energy. " He attended the banquet in the honor of his replacement then shot himself. The press claimed that Wolfgang was only dismmissed and driven to suicide due to his faith but given he was chosen in first place, it's hard to that this played any factor at all in his dismissal.

Vidéo YouTubeA.J.P Talor wrote about the origins of the WW2. ' They anticipated an attack on Poland and resolved the treat at as a casus belli. Switzerland was supposed to be endangered too. And there might be a surprise attack in England. That is not the smallest fragment of evidence that Hitler considered such plans. Neville Handerson was more accurate when he wrote on 18th February : " My define impression is that Hitler does not contemplate any adventure at the moment. Why he would have done so? Eastern Europe was falling into his lap. Hungrary, Romania and Yougoslavia were competing for his favor. France had abandoned Eastern Europe. Soviet RUssia was estranged from western powers. Poland remained in good terms with Germany despite the exasperating failure to find a solution to the Dantzig question. The only clou came from Czechoslowakia not that she could pursue an independant foreign policy independent of or hostile to Germany. But it was impossible to hold the state together once Czech prestige and power were shaken. Few people appreciated it in the west and the admirers of Czechoslovakia kept quiet about it. In western eyes, Czechoslowakia was a happy, democratic state, one totally dismembered by Hitler. In fact it was a state of nationalities created by Czech initiative and maintained by Czech authorities. Once it was broken, disentegration followed just as the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy followed defeated in WW1. " The world wondered what Hitler would do next. After the munich success, Hitler came in his favourite place, the Berhoff. He made plans here to rebuild the city in Austria he has grown in. President Benz has done all he could to bring a war between Czech and Germany.
In 1936, after Hitler came to power, there was a possibility of a Poland-Czech invasion of Germany to preempt Hitler's irredentists goals. In 1938, Benes moved with fake humors which he himself planted and used this as a justification to mobilize on the German border. At the end, his gamble failed and he had to run off into exile. Hitler gained the Sedan land. For HItler It was personal not with the Czech but with Benes. He feeled he was robbed from an opportunity for revenge. Now Benez was running aroud London trying to whip up a war harder than he never did before. Hitler said : " The Wehrmacht must always be prepared for the following. 1, securing the frontiers of the German Reich and protection against surprise air attacks. 2, liquidation of the remainder of the Czech state. " The quote is the end of the directive and it's given as a clear indication that Hitler wanted to destroy Czechoslovakia immediatly. But Hitler carried on to specify in the same directive : It must be possible to smash the remainder of the Czech state, should it pursue an anti German policy ". a.jo. Taylor call these measures precaution measures and not plans of agression. These directives are often used as quotes to say that Hitler never was sincere in accepting the Munich agreements. The truth is that Hitler doubted whether the settlement would work. Though often regarded as politically ignorant, he understood better than any european statesman the problem of Bohemia and understood that the independant Czechoslovakia would not survive when deprived of her natural frontiers. With Czech prestiga broken, it was not a wish for Czechoslovakia destruction. When Tzechoslovakia was created in 1918, It was also believed by Benes.
The real reason for Sedan to be included is due to the defensive mountainous terrains and rew materials here. Benis claimed that without sugar raffineries, glassworks, textiles, mill smelters and breweries in these lands, the state would not survive. " He was right. The state wouldn't survive. What began to Czechoslovakia began to unravel. The slovaks felt that the promises of masarik of regional autonomy simply hadn't been delivered. The coutry was called Czechoslovakia but in reality it was a Czech state. Out all the 8 000 civils in the servant in the government offices, only 200 were slovaks. In october 1938, the Slovaks successfully caused enough of ruckus to be granted their own regional parliament. Instead of working within the system however the delegates in the parliament just pushed towards eventual independance. For this fact, HItler wasn't innocent either. Since Munich, agents from HImmler's SS, Goebbel's propaganda ministry and Goering's 4 years plan and the nazis foreign organization were deep inside Slovakia half of Czechoslovakia stirring up nationalist sentiments. On 21st January 1939, Hitler had a meeting with Czech foreign ministry in which he demanded total Czech neutrality as well as a reduction of Czech armed forces. Hitler simply did not trust the Czech anymore after 6 years past of drama.Aroud this time contacts were made between Hitler and Tuka. Tuka was a slovak agitator who had been released from prison and in HItler, he saw his country's path to independence rather that the current hyphenated semi independance with the Czechs. In the 10th February, France Calmerson, the head of the ethnic Germans in Slovakia, was informed that sometime in the upcoming month or so, things would be coming to a head with Czechs. That they should take necessary measures for such an event.
On 12nd February, Tuka visited Hitler personally and told him : " My people await their total liberation by you. " At the same time, as there was the Hungrarian issue. The Hungrarians had seen the majority of their land taken from them after the Great War. Now the focus point of their entire politic scene was the return of at lest some of these land. s. When Hitler came to power, the Hungrarians too saw some opportunities. When it come to Munich crisis, the Hungrarian acted laughably show however. Despite all their worlds to the contrary. And Hitler would often moch them and their leader Horthi in private. After meeting with Horthi during the Sudetes crisis about the Slovak matter, he lost all sympathy with the Hungrarian cause. David Irving wrote in the war path : " It was inconceivable to him that Hungrary was so reluctant to fight to regain their part of Slovakia. " The Fuhrer called how strongly he had warned the Hungrarians both on board ship and when I had visied the Ober Solsburg. He said that he planned to sell the Czech problem so or so in October, Poland had seen her chance struck out and had what she wanted. You can solve problems by such negociations only if you are determiend to fight otherwise. It was only this that gained for him the Fuhrer's everything he wanted. Hitler himself quoted : " I am not annoyed with Hungrarybut she has missed the bus. " For Hitler the Hungrarian's ship had sailed and now he would try his luck with the Slovaks who proofed far more willing to work with him. As a result, until the end of the war, Hitler and the Slovaks would remain loyals friends whilst the Hungrarian relationship was always a strained one with Horthy wanting everything his way and at his own slow pace. Some of the distate for Hungrary actually resultet from matters outside their controls.
It was between the 2 crisis that it was discovered that tha Italian's foreign ministry policy of wanting to build up Hungrary in order to hold Germany. Ribbentrop immediatly saw this policy and it didn't help Hungrary's cause at all and the Germans trust for Italians in that matter. However Goering would use the Hungrarians card to push the Slovaks to act. Hitler genuily seemed to care about the Slovak cause. And it suited to him nicely. a.jp. Yalor quote : " The Slovaks were a new element in Hitler's calculations, free both from the Czech devotion to democracy and from the Hungrarian illusions of greatness. He regretted that he had not known earlier the Slovak struggle for independence. It's often said that Hitler favored Slovak's independence as a roote for invading Ukraine in Soviet Union. Geography makes htis impractical as the reverse idea that Soviet Russia could threaten Germany though Czechoslovakia. Hitler backed Slovakia for her own sake. A reliable satellite state as it prooved ot be during the WW2. " The Czechs quickly caught wind of the Slovakian intentions. The tensions had been rising and ever since the Germans in the Sudetes gained their freedom, the Slovakians would obviously be soon to follow. On 9th March, the Czech gave their replies and the Slovak government was dismissed. The Czech Army marched into Slovakia. They had enough of the calls from independence from guys like Tuka. They took the gamble just as they had in regard to the Sudetes. The state was barely independant at this point anyway. It was a nation that simply trying to comply as best they could do with Germany's wishes regardless They felt they had enough autonomy left to put the Slovaks in back line.
When Hitler got the news early on 19th March, he was left with 2 options. Letting the Czech restore their prestige in a way that was out of question and regardless, the Slovaks seemed good to have on side if he made the Czechs stayed out but didn't support the Slovaks, then Hungrary would Hungrary would move in. It was unlikely that Horthy would asleep at the wheel a second time. As a result, he made the logical chooice of supporting the Solvaks. Father Tiso, the Slovak prime minister, has taken refuge in the Jesuit College. Hitler quickly sent for him. But things weren't so easy.

Vidéo YouTubeNowadays Hitler is seen as a warmonger. And once the war was sent off, it's fair since he declared wars to dozens of countries. Some will buy guarantees such as the United States. Some somply because they were in their way like Luxemburg or Denmark. Saying it was necessary military doesn't mean it was justified althought the occupation was as benevolent as they could underthe circumstances for countries like Denmark or Luxemburg. During historiy, Germany was separated into literally hundreds of tiny semi independents states under the banner of the Holy Roman Empire. Over the time and especially in the late 19st century, these states emerged into a state, Prussia, under a variety of means. Only ones independent due to their large mostly non German empire of their own, Austria. At the end of the treaty of Versailles, one of the terms was that Austria now stripped of their empire and a tiny nation. wedged between larger nations was forbidden to unite with her ethnic German brother, Germany. The same way Castille and Aragon became Spain and Muscovy and Novgorod became Russia, Moldavia and Wallachia became Romania. Austira and Germany were told now that they couldnt' do the same. The reality is that there weren't such a way to practically stop this if the populations both wanted to go ahead. In Austria there was a huge national socialist party movement. At apoint a violent coup with the Chancellor Dolphus was assassinated. Hitler kept his distance to the degree and was furiou. He wanted the two peoples to unite together naturally. Then the opportunity fell under his lap. After a serie of complicated affairs, it ended with the German Army walking into Austria to the joy of the population. It's called the anscheluss.in Germany mostly at the time It was called the flowers war as the Austrians threw flowers in the upcoming German troops.
The vast majority of the population was enjoyed to finally be reunited in one German nation. It was hard for any major power to justify to intervene with the Anscheluss. Even Mussolini who has guaranteed Austria's independence was happy enough to elt it go ahead. After all no one else would. After the Anscheluss, in Czechoslovakia, 3 millions of Germans began kicking up a for an unification with their homeland. Czechoslovakia was such a weird country built after WW1 based on sketchy maps which resulted in an absolute mess. When asked why he gave these Germans over the Czechs when the whole idea of peace in the WW1 was self determination. Even after its creation, the large Hungrarian and German minorities were petitionning the league of nations to return to their ethnic nations. The Czechs waited far to long to grant this autonomy. The parliament was totally dominated by Czechs. So they ended up with a very unhappy minority that was in reality majority as the Slovakians didn't want any part of the state either. A rebellious nationalism arose in the Germans land that transformed that transformed interntional socialism. The Czechs were nominally allied with France and the Soviets and had one of the best equipped armies in Europe. The Sudetes mountainous was one of the best fortified place in Europe along France's maginot line. Hitler felt it was a dagger pointed at the heart of the Reich in 1938. And rumors were going on saying that Germany was going to invade at this time. It was false and there are reasons to believe that it was implemented by the Czech government to humiliated Hitler. It was in fact the Czech themselves who had mobilized in the borders to proof this was all made up. German officers escorted British military advisers along the border when no attack came. The Czechs bragged about how theyr forced Hitler to back down. And this became the media narrative all over the world.
Hitler went furious and went into a rage, claiming that he would wipe the Czechs off the map and the usual kind of bluster you would expect from Hitler. Chamberlain was sick of the Czechs who caused a false crisis. He also knew the Czech was paying the British cabinet ministers such as Winston Churchill indirectly to oustin from office and be replaced by someone who would go to war with Germany. Chamberlain was happy to negociate if that meant peace in Europe. With Mussolini as a mediator, the British were happy to sign away the German areas of Czechoslovakia. The Czechs had no chooice but to accept it. Though it was a long overdue from historical perspective before the WW1, the Germans held a privilieged place in the Austro Hungrarian Empire and had a very unhappy timeline under their new Czech overlords after all the fasters the Czech has caused. It's hard to argue against. The Czechsreluctantly gave up their heavily fortified border to Germany. Immediatly after the seddation, the Germans seceded the others minorities such as the Hungrarians, Slovakians and Ukrainians began agitating to set free from the Czech rules. The Germans had been helping all along with this agitating to keep them doing so as they want abroad. The dispute arosed between Hungrary and the Czechs over southern Slovakia which was majority an Hungrarian ethnic area. The Germans offers to mediate and eventually the land will come to Hungrary. By now the Czech state was falling apart. On 7th March 1939, the Czech president dismissed. 3 days later he gave the Slovaks their independance after the Slovaks were pushing for it. Father Tiso, Slovak prime minister, flew into Vienna to ask for German's help. He was told to declare independance immediatly if he wanted Germany's help. The next day, Slovakia declared independence. The Ruthenians followed soon.
The Czech state now barely existed in reality. Hungrary was allowed to march into Ruthenia. Hitler had done huge favor to Ukrainian nationalism that was ablaze in the area which would cause huge problems in the Soviet Union. The Czech president asked to meet Hitler in 1939. It started on well with Hitler sending a box of chocolates. But then the Czech president was threated with the invasion of his country. He suffered an heart attack but got reanimated. And finally he signed his country away to Germany. The Czech land of Czechoslovakia became a protectorate of Germany. Nominally Hitler claimed it was to restore order as the Czech state was collapsing on itself which to a degree was true but ridiculous at the same time. On 15th March, German troops marched in and occupied the border with Poland who it appeared was preparing for a third time at a moment of weakness as they done last year. What Hitler cared about most was returning the ethnic Germans to the Reich. But by doing this, Hitler's international reputation went up in flames. Chamberlain who had put his hopes in Hitler, felt betrayed.
