In Europe, alcohol abuse is punished (a pity there is no penalty for oversmoking), while moderate use is rather encouraged, as it brings in revenue for the state. This is a “myopic” policy, looking only from one day to the next, sparing little thought for the future. Instead of cashing in on citizens' "short-term needs" (let one generation suffer jangled nerves), we ought to endeavor to help them to unwind and relax more effectively after their menial labors. Energy wasted on idiocy should be conserved to improve work.
A person deadened by tobacco and alcohol is incapable of this. He seeks even more mind-numbing entertainment to relax, and there is plenty to choose from. The utterly depraved cinema with its vacuous attempts at artistry, radio reduced to “station surfing,” or, at best, to a sensory narcotization through music, much like a dog howls to a tune without any profounder feeling for art. A basic musical sensibility is required, a musical, not a “howling,” comprehension of music. Then there is the chronic and brainless dancing, that most monstrous of modern society's unacknowledged plagues. And finally, the best of them all, sports, which, if kept in check and not inflated to the comical dimensions of a priesthood, could at least promote physical fitness without the loftier pursuits of the young and healthy being ravaged by mental debilitation.
