"Well, from the stands it appears as it's just a bunch of rednecks pumping high octane fuel into a car with wide slick tires and a big engine.
But I can tell you from the other side of pit wall, it is an engineering feat that is hard to fathom for the uninitiated.
The number of MIT graduate level degrees in the garage is staggering. The things they do to those cars in tests and practices the average fan just doesn't see. They change springs to change the tension of the springs on each wheel. They attempt to get the aerodynamic forces perfect to get a car to rotate around the corners at the highest possible speed for the track conditions (time of day, weather, temperature) in every corner, even though every corner may have totally different banking and turn radius.
The best drivers are masters at communicating their driving conditions. Crew Chiefs change air pressure by half a pound per tire to change handling on pit stops.
Goodyear designs a different tire for every track, and each tire on the car for that track can have a different rubber compound. Sometimes tires have a different inner lateral compound from outer.
The engine engineers from manufacturers are watching engine parameters and interacting with car chiefs.
The tire man is measuring track temperature and adding and removing air from each tire as necessary right before the stop based ambient air changes.
The spotters that know their stuff, are engineers in their own right. They know when a driver is tight or loose and how well they are rotating through the corners. They understand the drag on the cars and how drafting works in different conditions on different tracks.
After the race crews spend hours going over everything and taking and comparing notes on every lap.
So for the guys on the other side... Yeah, it's a different ball of wax than those sitting in the stands."
