"Applause from the audience rang out when residents asked questions at a community hall in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture.

But the cheers were not what the organizers of the gathering were seeking.

The positive responses from the crowd were made whenever negative comments or criticism were lodged against the organizer’s plans to build a mosque in the community.

The scene later turned ugly.

Plans to install mosques have increased in number around the country as the presence of Muslims in Japanese society continues to grow.

But residents have opposed such moves, raising concerns about the effects of certain religious practices as well as possible noise and traffic congestion from the holy buildings.

Muslims and their supporters have held meetings to explain the mosque plans to residents.

However, the gathering in Fujisawa in late February underscored the divisiveness of the issue."

"Japan’s Muslim population is estimated at approximately 420,000 as of the end of 2024, representing about 0.3% of the total population. This figure marks a 3.8-fold increase over the past two decades, driven primarily by immigration and labor policies such as the technical intern trainee program.

Demographic Breakdown: The largest group consists of Indonesians (approx. 200,000), followed by citizens from Bangladesh (35,000), Pakistan (30,000), Malaysia (12,000), and Turkey (8,000).
Native Converts: There are an estimated 54,000 Japanese converts to Islam, with the majority being women who married immigrant Muslims.
Religious Infrastructure: The number of mosques has grown to approximately 160 locations nationwide as of July 2025, up from just two in 1970.
Future Projections: Long-term estimates suggest the Muslim population could reach 450,000–550,000 by 2050, contingent on continued migration trends.
Note that Japan does not record religious affiliation in its national census, so these figures are derived from institutional surveys, residence status statistics, and academic research rather than direct census counts. "
